Got my first engagement shoot at the weekend on a beach down here. Had a practice run last weekend, so iam feeling pretty confident with it all.

The main sticking point, bar the weather of course is the poses-just hope my mind doesnt go blank! I do have an app for it just incase

Anyway, iam just after advice on after the shoot itself in what ways I can market myself really. Iam thinking of giving the couple a few ideas, for example say to them the photos could be use in thankyou cards, background wedding photos. That kinda thing. So those that have done so before, what tends to happen with your engagement photos that you take?

I don't do many but they are always for a purpose if I do

i.e. they already are buying a Photo Guestbook, Sig frame, framed desktop prints to hand to parents on their Wedding day as a 'Goodbye' etc. I've also seen then used as photos on which to place the table numbers too

I'd never do one and hope to sell something afterwards - HTH - even if only for next time :D

Wedding invitations, for this you could have them create the wedding date on the sand, either by writing it with a stick or with pebbles.

Are you shooting the wedding? I use the e session to give posing tips which saves time and effort on the wedding day.

Blogging the e shoot is great for SEO too. If you're smart about your titles.

ie not 'Dave and Angela's engagement shoot' but 'Mytown pre wedding photographs' or include wedding the venue etc.

Time it for the light, so you'll be able to get a sunset or at least overpower the sun a little. It's surprising how little drama you need in the sky to produce a nice backdrop for an OCF shot.

Cheers guys, yeah iam shooting the wedding aswell.

Yeah I did think about the invites-I think that might have already been sorts tho. Will check.

A sunset would be ideal, wishful thinking there tho! Hope so, would be great. What's people views on the '&' 'love' symbols?

The thing about sunsets is that it's a chance that you have some control over. If you do the shoot at 10 in the morning, you'll not get a sunset - if you time it for an hour before sunset, you might get one. It's simply playing the percentage.

If you're shooting at twilight, even if the sky is boring, there's things you can do as the light drops. Remember that light is the difference between photographs and snaps. So you can go from sunlit, to fill flash to flashlit with some light in the background, to flashlit with a black background.

Or you can book it at ten in the morning and have sunlit (admittedly, there's more you can do, but it's harder to balance a midday sun than an evening one)

The couple want to met at midday so I doubt I will be able to get any sunset shots now :(
