Has anyone upgraded yet and care to share your thoughts on the new version?

Only just had notification Steve but I don't think there's anything PL4 doesn't do for me.
Having said that, I did add Viewpoint recently to work with PL4 - I'm keen to avoid the upgrade treadmill where possible! :)

As a long time user of PhotoLab I was really pleased when I heard that it supports Fuji X-Trans files. However, my joy was soon dashed when I found out my ancient but super specced MacPro won’t run it

Have you tried the trial?

My old laptop is not supposed to be able to run 4 but it works fine (if a little slow at times)
I have and it won’t install - I have used DXO and PhotoLab for years so it’s a shame I can no longer run the latest version.

I just hope this isn’t the slippery slope and that my other editing apps won’t go the same way.

It seems that DXO seem to be on an annual or so upgrade path. It has to cost me less significantly less that an Adobe subscription otherwise it would be stupid of me to continue with it. The thing that irks me most about pl4 is that it strips out meta tags carefully added in PhotoMechanic and I see that pl5 is flogging the idea of better word searches. I intend to download 5 and make a decision I guess.

Just installed the trial and it seems to work just as well as 4 on my old windows laptop. Lightroom really struggles although I actually prefer DXO now anyway.

Not enough difference for me to upgrade if I'm honest.

From the marketing hype I don't see anything new in PL5 that makes me feel I must have it. I do, however, like to keep applications up to date.

@Mike.P : If you download the trial does it install alongside PL4 or replace it?

@Bristolian

I have always installed new versions in parallel with the previous one. Though one thing to bear in AFAIK, is that the .dop files created in the newest version may not(?) be fully readable by the previous version?

That's a good point. Provided they reside alongside each other I would copy some unedited NEF files into a temporary folder and only give PL5 access to that folder. It's what I do when trialling new apps and keeps my edited images safe.

Anyone know what the stance is if you miss one upgrade? Doesn’t appear to be too much there of interest in this update for me.

I haven’t bought DXO for year and my upgrade price is the same as the. We price advertised on their website.
Personally I can’t stand DXO as a company so won’t be buying anymore of their software.

From what I can tell, any ratings that you add in Photo Mechanic before you go into PL4 are read in PL4, but if you then change them, it doesn't update the sidecar, so Photo Mechanic doesn't see the change.

I have PL5 on trial, and if you make changes you can 'write the metadata' and it shows up in Photo Mechanic. You can also set it to automatically sync, but I need to do that on a test folder - bit nervous about losing everything! There is much more scope for editing keywords and IPTC info.

I quite like the look of the luma and chroma options for the new control line. You can also label the local adjustments - not sure if you've always been able to do that?

@Bebop

Beware of setting PL5 as the metadata sync 'source'. As far as I have read it PL5 does not yet address/honour all metadata IPTC fields and if for example you sync PL5 it will strip those already, via say LR, populated. So best to not set PL5 to sync metadata!

Yes that was my worry! I saw a good YouTube video by Photo Joseph - I need to go back and watch again. He showed it syncing immediately with Lightroom (which I don't use).

In regard to LR, AFAIK PL5 is not (out of the box) syncing with anything but does read .xmp files that LR (can be configured to create as it is with mine) uses to store the metadata information (?).

I have PL5 installed and when I accessed image folders, for each image I can see the metadata i.e. reading the .xmp files for the images.

@Box Brownie Photo Joseph definitely demonstrated it syncing with Lightroom immediately when he changed the rating - he split the screen. You may have to change that setting to sync it. I'll have to have a look and see if I can find the video.

Yup, though at approx 3:35 he sets in the PL5 preferences setting to "sync" the metadata..................i.e. he did indeed make the elective decision to sync the metadata and thus cause the potential issue that I think I recall reading about and mentioned above ;)

RE: Metadata
Last post here about careful handling of what you choose to do.

And this tutorial page

Where the risk of loss of metadata is (also) mentioned.

Yes I think I will stick with letting Photo Mechanic handle it but write it to xml if for some reason I change it in PL which does occasionally happen, so I'm quite pleased to see it included..
