I have been reading a bit about Sebastiao salgado and his new genesis project. He basically shoots digitally, then runs the images through the Tri-x filter on dxo filmpack, before making a 35mm negative from the digital file.
Salgado is one of my main inspirations, so I thought I would give dxo filmpack a go (I realise that salgado is far more skilled so produces better results). So far I am not too keen on the results. Usually I use silver fx and alien skins exposure 4 and have varied success with these program's. I have read that dxo filmpack has better grain rendition, but I find that the results seem a bit clunky and messy. I know grain adds texture, but salgado's images retain a certain silky look to them, despite the grain from the film.
What are other people's experience with the dxo filmpack? Plus what have people found to be the best editing procedure to use with such film filters. Do you edit as normal then apply the filter, or do you hold back a bit on the raw editing then apply the filter?
