HELP!!!

Now it's legal to make copies for personal use, I'm hoping that there's an easy and cheap (ideally free!) app or programme to do the conversion from the disk to enable me to watch the film during flights. Ideally it'll be pretty much a one button process, although an easy, logical progression is within my capabilities if the software guides me through the process. I'd rather not have to go through several processes to get the desired result but again, if I have to rip then convert, I can as long as it holds my hand while I do it!

I'll be using a Windows 8 machine to do the ripping/conversion and will be watching on Android (Samsung and Lenovo - Mrs Nod might want to watch a film too!)
 
Freemake is also good. I convert every DVD I ahem make straight away as our discs always end up scratched. I whack them all onto a 1TB drive which is hooked up to my Sumvision Cyclone Micro 2+, a tiny cheap yet excellent media player that supports loads of formats.

It's especially good for all the kids stuff I make as it saves putting DVD's in and out especially for shorter stuff.

I do everything in 720p so that I can use the same file to copy straight onto my Android tablet for travelling in the car, which has 64GB of storage so I can get more on it rather than 1080p and you hardly notice the difference in quality.

Another vote for Handbrake to rip and mx player on the tablet to watch.
 
Thanks. Have DL Handbrake and will have a play later. Thanks also for the suggestion of 720 over 1080 - will save space and I don't think I'll notice the drop in quality!
 
I thought it was ruled recently that any form of copying was now illegal, even things like putting your mp3 collection on a cd.
 
Another vote for Handbrake

If they are protected DVD's then you'll also have put a copy of libdvdcss-2.dll into your Handbrake install directory

EDIT- also with some films I look for a cheap UV code over on the bay then can watch on flixster with any device. Downside of Ultraviolet still a bit limited with the titles they have got

I tried handbrake last night but didn't install that extra thing. Freemake just does it automatically.
 
If Handbrake is a PITA, I'll try Freemake instead. I have VLC on the reader machine which apparently helps - we'll see!
 
Handbrake didn't want to play nicely with the first disk I tried, so I DLed Freemake which seems to be doing the job. Taking a while but since it may be doing it frame by frame, I'm not surprised! Proof of the pudding will be in the eating, so here's hoping that Marvin will appear on the Android screen.

Sometimes the law is an arse. I used iTunes from before there was a music store and always for personal use. And I will continue to do so.
