Yes
right guys, as title really

what's the best and most reliable way to get a dvd onto an ipad?

I've used handbrake before, but found it a little clunky and it didnt deal with the encoding on the disc. :(

Makemkv and ripbot is the other way, that'll give you an mp4 I think or Mkv which you can use with avplayerhd.

You might have the same problem with copy protection though, anydvd will help you there but it's paid for app.

Cheers Neil, I'll do so digging on those ones

I use DVD shrink to create an iso file and use that in handbrake. Never had any problems with it.

I'll add that to my list of software to look at, :)

Makemkv will bypass any copy protection. You can then pass the mkv file into handbrake to convert.

I have only used it on DVDs.
I have used dvdfab on blu ray but that's to recompress the video and isolate the subtitles etc... so doing quite a bit more. I use it to store my blu rays on a nas so I can watch them via media streamer box.

I hate getting my hands dirty with stuff like this, so I use Xilisoft DVD to iPad Converter. Simple and easy.

That sounds interesting, :)

I too hate having to use different pieces of software to get one job done.

iTunes...

/runs and hides

I really do have a dislike of iTunes at the best of times.

Handbrake doesn't deal with the copy protection systems though Pete, so getting the films I paid a fortune for onto my ipad won't work.

I have used DVDfab for the last couple of years and have only have it spit out 1 or 2 discs that it did not like, and has even done some that handbrake wouldn't do... and its brilliant!! I use it to convert from DVD to iPad format, and also taking backups of my DVDs. I now use handbrake to convert DVD files to iPad format but have had a few problems where it puts the files in the wrong order which mixes the movie up, which can be a bit interesting!!!

its the mixing up the chapters where I was having the troubles with Handbrake and reading the net suggests thats down to the copy protection placed on the disc by the studios. Interestingly i re did black hawk down with handbrake and it worked if i selected an output of NTSC

Still, it got some movies on to my ipad and allowed me to get some enjoyment out of a few dreary days away with work.

i'll have a look at DVDfab now though
