I have finally convinced my parents to scrap there VCR and get a DVD Recorder. What I am looking for is a very easy to operate machine suitable for the technically disadvantaged grey brigade.

If any of you fine people can recommend a DVD Recorder suitable for there needs, I’d be very grateful.

Thank you

Ian

Panasonic or Sony both make great products.

As I own a Panny TV we got a matching HDD recorder which can be operated from the tv remote, the same goes for Sony I believe.

Panasonic machines are very user friendly - we have them in school and I got my folks one that even my dad can get his head around.

Avoid sony. I wasted £500 on their top model a while back and it has to be rebooted about three times a week.

I wouldn't get a DVD recorder, too much faffing about with disks etc. A HDD system is much more flexible & user friendly.

Wife never used our DVD recorder but loves the HDD box :)

If they want dvd recording then go for panasonic. My parents can work one so it can't be that hard. You can either record from the epg or input times/channels manually like an old fashioned vcr.

I'd consider the pvr route as being better and more flexible in the long term as it means not bothering with finding disks and keeping track on what's on them. And it is much easier to record lots and not spend time watching ads so you essentially schedule your ideal evening's viewing.

It is a good idea to have a recorder with hard drive and disc. That enables you to hire or borrow dvds to watch or if you record a programme on the hard drive you can copy it to a disc to keep in your collection or to lend to friends.
Two friends of mine have the Panasonic dmr-ex773e. It is a very versitile machine with 160Gb hard drive and of course you can play dvd discs on it.
The two owners that I know are both in their 70s and find it easy to use.
One of the features I like is that a memory usb stick can be inserted and the jpeg photos can be stored on the hard drive. Which is particularly useful for anyone without a computer. Any photos I take of the granchildren of my friends I put the on their hard drive and they can look at them on a big screen.
The machine is £279 at Currys but both my friends bought theirs from Pixmania for £199 plus £6-50 p/p. A bargain.

Wow, thank you all so much for your suggestions...........HDD looks they way forward for the oldies. Now I have some research to do.

Once again thanks for your help.

I have a Toshiba, best of both worlds it does dvd and hdd recording and very easy to use.

Panasonic HDD recorders will burn a dvd for you too.......if you ask it nicely

Freeview pvr is the way forward

Agree. Look at the Humax PVR boxes. Industry leaders.

Never considered a PVR box but will def read up on them.

Thank you

Yup I have a Panasonic too, mines a dvd HDD device with freeview.

Easy peasy to use, just bring up the program guide and hit record. Switch it into standby and hey presto.

I went for High def because it upscales DVD's to almost 1080p and has still got optical output to feed my yamaha amp

Not the cheapest but I've had a few and it's by far the best.
