DVD box sets recommendations?

BofB would suit women too. lots of tottie for the ladies there and some fine acting.
West Wing as said above ^
NCIS is great but it's on tv five times a day seven days a week atmo so too fresh.
Bab5 is an excellent (and cheap) box set with very good story lines.
(I have season 1 of Glee unopened if you're interested? got it free with a phone...)
MacGyver? good for both sexes.
Bergerac and or Morse? same problem with being on tv all the time.

I know they have already been mentioned but:

Stargate SG1 (wicked!)
24
Prison Break

All well worth it, if your a real geek like me then Star Trek Voyager is worth it as well!

Finally, best TV series I've seen in years: Entourage. Only 30min episodes but very funny! You can get each series for around a tenner now as well, bargain!! ;)

Another Prison Break fan here, loved season 1 but didn't enjoy the other that followed as much. Very violent but the main character is SO fit - the women won't mind overlooking it - lol :-)

Hustle is a good series.

I got my OH the Only Fools and Horses and Bond Box sets but maybe not what you're looking for.

How about Harry Potter?

I could recommend others but they are mainly girly and American so I won't for fear of ridicule!!
BTW to the OP - what a great idea DVD night, may have to borrow that idea!

Girly & american......Sex in the City?!!! Very good in my opinion!

Firefly is awesome! Such a shame they only made one season.

Didn't even get to finish it either. Real shame that, but it did mean Buffy and Angel got some great characters.

The Wire. Not for children though

If you like sci-fi, Firefly, then watch Serenity after watching the whole series. I'll avoid other scifi recommendations as it's something a lot of people don't get on with (I have shelves full of scifi DVD box sets though :D ), but Firefly does not use the scifi stuff as a lever to move the plot all the time, so it is more incidental in many episodes.

British ones:
Jewel in the crown. ITV made quality drama once upon a time. Hard to believe now.
Harry's Game. See above
Edge of darkness
and for something really obscure, BBC2 put out a short (3 episode) series called Shooting the past about a dozen years ago about a photo library. It's one of my all time favourite bits of TV drama.

Bones is relly great - miss them now parents cancelled sky. :(

I'm on my 3rd time watching sopranos through again, its simply awesome,
Prison break is a must, thou last season is bit weak!
House
Dexter

They did make a movie of it a few years later called Serenity which was very good indeed, although it was made for the masses so didn't continue where the series ended, moreover told the whole story again. But it retained the full cast and feel of the series so if you havnt watched it, definitely one to get!

I forgot about The OC! That was great but it did go a bit wierd at the end in my opinion! I got bored after a while! :bonk:

Numb3rs was a series I (surprisingly) got into, Don't know if "Crimes involving maths" floats your boat though (even though a lot of the time its fairly understandable.)

Spooks is currently my favourite 'crime' series (if it can be defined as such), it has a more personal storyline to each character (and sometimes between), less of a traditional storyline (although usually one series focuses on one main theme). Great twists in the last series as well.

Ooh. Yes. Numb3rs was quite good, never remembered to watch more than a few though.

The west wing collectors set is currently £59 in hmv for all 7 seasons, that'll keep you occupied all winter

I'm another advocate if the West Wing; it really is the best written thing I've ever watched. I'm currently on my third cycle of watching it, and I'm still not bored, It's fantastic.

Another one written by Aaron Sorkin is 'Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip'. It was cancelled after its first season, but that was down to American politics rather than quality of the show. It really is fantastic, and cancelling it was a travesty.

+1 for Life on Mars (2 series) followed by Ashes to Ashes (3 series).

In my opinion it is one of the best concepts and has a brilliant storyline throughout. Especially once you get to Season 3 of Ashes to Ashes when it gets very dark after all the comedy moments throughout the first two series of it. My wife and I keep going back and watching them again. Brilliant stuff.

As long as no one who will be watching is too put off by violence and nudity then I would also suggest True Blood (now in its 4th series). That's another show we are completely addicted to.

Well ive just finished the wire and i have to say it was the best piece of TV i have ever seen! and i cant imagine anything beating it soon, having said that i am enjoying battle star Galactica (just finished the first series) and although not as good, its not too far off.

It really depends what you wont though, both of them have complex story lines that take energy to watch (no falling asleep in the middle :P )

If you wont something a bit easier ive also been really enjoying house MD (can you tell i have alot of time atm) but it can be a bit repetitvie (similar style every episode)

Jack

And the winner was.... BENIDORM!!!!!!!!

It WAS NOT chosen by me but I have to admit that it makes me

Arrested Development

Got to be the funniest TV program of the last decade - sheer brilliance. When our baby was first born we used to have the DVD on loop constantly over night so whenever we were woken up we'd sit and watch a bit more - kept us sane as every morning we'd say to each other 'did you see that bit...'
