DVD box sets recommendations?

We used to go to the cinema once a week but switched to twice weekly DVD nights in complete with chocies and wine. We've just finished watching "Lost" and previously watched "The Sopranos" so I'm now looking for something similar... a box set with a continuous story arc rather than just individual episodes.

I have a box set of "Battlestar Galactica" but after seeing some on TV and hating every second that's out as is "Babylon 5" as I loved it but it's not suitable for the others.

I have a box set of the original Randal and Hopkirk and I love it but it's not really a continuous story.

At the moment I can't think of anything else that tells a continuous story, so I wondered if anyone here could recommend a story telling box set?
 
Band of Brothers is the best box set I have seen maybe ever! Stories are deep enough for those not just interested in war too.
 
Yes, I liked BofB but I HATED Pacific or whatever it was called. I'd watch BofB again but as two DVD night people are women I doubt it'll go down too well. Will float the idea. Not sure about Blackadder but it would suit me.

The next box set I treat myself to might be The World at War but that's not suitable for DVD night.

I love world cinema and I'd watch a movie but the others wont watch a film with subtitles.

If you like political humour (and don't mind the f-word being used "liberally") the Armoando Iannucci's The Thick of It is good. In a similar vein, although a drama and with less swearing is the excellent State of Play,

Another oft overlooked series available on dvd is Private Schulz, starring Michael Elphick (who you may remember as Boon) and the wonderful Ian Richardson (playing, iirc, 5 different roles). Speaking of Richardson, the House of Cards trilogy where he plays a Peter Mandelson-type character is also really good, if you like that sort of thing....
 
Two other comedy series come to mind

The IT crowd and Black books, both excellent.

Interesting what you say about Pacific, does get very mixed reviews, will prolly get it when dirt cheap.
 
For some reason I just coundn't feel anything for the characters in Pacific and some of the episodes were dire IMVHO. Generally I thought that it was a pale shadow of B of B.
 
Hmmm. Depends on what you're into really. I'd recommend the US series 'Six Feet Under' There's old wifey friendly stuff like 'Thirty Something' or the later thing with Ken Olin and that twig from Ally McBeal. Brothers and Sisters. Been about 4 series of it. Bit kitchen sink and rich americans moaning but some good people in it like Sally Field. And the one called Dirty, Sexy Money. A few people from Six Feet Under in it which is why I started watching it. Love to hate the people in it kind of thing :)

There's also a great American law series called Boston Legal. Really funny and has continuous and separate stories going on.

There's also Due South.

UK ones. I enjoyed Shameless. Didn't think I would but I did.

Old stuff like Blott on the Landscape and Porterhouse Blue. Comic Strip films. Couple of two parters but mostly one offs. Jeeves and Wooster. That's mainly one offs but themes generally run through and repeat. The Reeves and Mortimer Randall and Hopkirk I thought was pretty good. Didn't see the originals though.

If you didn't see it on BBC4 then the Danish Crime drama 'The Killing' was really good. American version that is on now isn't a patch on it. Again a bit gruesome and not for under 18s...but if the sopranos is ok then it will seem mild in comparison ;)

Another vote for Black books. Also Greenwing as that is surreal. Oh and Beiderbecke series with James Bolam and Barbara Flynn. Were about 3 different series of that. All excellent. Alan Plater I think.

Hopefully there will be something in that lot that appeals!

I'm not so sure about 24 but Spooks might be a possibility as I liked in and only caught the later few series.

I haven't actually heard of some suggestions so I'll need to Google them.

Band of Brothers is brilliant and worth watching (no idea why you thought women wouldnt enjoy it - but then I love watching war stuff or kicking butt movies)

The Wire (bloody brilliant US drama series - much under-rated)
24 (but only the first few series)
Supernatural (takes a bit to get into this one as the first series is a little disconnected)
Murder One (only two series of these but both good)
 
The Sopranos was great with only a couple of duff episodes but I've seen it twice now.

The wire
The Good wife
Prison break
Bones
 
Lots of good ideas here but some aren't continuous stories, as such.

My first choice would be something with a story arc running all the way through in the way that The Sopranos and Lost have. Other things, like for example Law and Order, although having a bit of a thread have only a weak one with each episode being mostly a stand alone story.
 
Roots is a great watch.
 
Prison Break and 24 are must sees, absolutely essential viewing!

Prison break has a very intriguing story arc running through it...
 
I don't think The West Wing has been mentioned, was one of the few shows we watched every episode :)

In that case Fringe is a must see.
 
Just bought Street Hawk on DVD.
Chuck is also good viewing, some comedy and a decent story line.
The Mentallist is very good viewing.
 
Seinfeld and phoenix nights, both a bundle of laughs, if you want to try out seinfeld, buy season 7 trust me you wont be dissapointed, The soup nazi is a classic.
 
The Shield is awesome and one of the best cop shows I have seen in a long time.
Fringe is a great show, like X files for a new generation and without the alien stuff.
Heard good things about The Wire.
Torchwood - Like Dr Who for adults, the first two serise are great.
Commedy It crowd, black books, and big bang theory.
My wife has been re watching Jonathan Creek and I have to say they are still good.
Animation - Family guy is just brilliant.
Shame you didn't get on with Battlestar Galactica as it was a really good re make.
 
Another Prison Break fan here, loved season 1 but didn't enjoy the other that followed as much. Very violent but the main character is SO fit - the women won't mind overlooking it - lol :-)

Hustle is a good series.

I got my OH the Only Fools and Horses and Bond Box sets but maybe not what you're looking for.

How about Harry Potter?

I could recommend others but they are mainly girly and American so I won't for fear of ridicule!!

BTW to the OP - what a great idea DVD night, may have to borrow that idea!
 
Another vote for Murder One especially the first series, Hill Street Blues is another golden oldie well worth watching again

can't believe this is the first mention of Rome in this thread. Buy, watch it and enjoy every last minute of both seasons.

Also, get Deadwood, but only if you don't mind a lot of swearing

Get Game of Thrones when it is released.

and lastly, without a shadow of a doubt, do yourself a favour and buy the best comedy show ever made Curb your Enthusiasm. It's pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good
