Hi, Just an observation from my departure from Gatwick airport on Thursday.
While waiting I had a look around Dixons DUTY FREE (Note the FREE)
and the price for a Canon 6D body only £1375 DUTY FREE!!!
Looking on the net and in a magazine the body can be found at under £1300 with all duty paid and FREE P&P from within the UK.
So what exactly is the duty on a 6D?

A common misconception is that anything marked as "duty free" will be cheaper than the equivalent duty paid item. that's why you see the queues to buy booze and fags at airports.

The retailer will still add his mark-up, and if his mark-up results in the total price being more than you can buy the same article from a high street shop, then so be it. He knows that folk will still buy because they believe they are getting a bargain.

To clarify:

If you travel from one EU Country to another EU Country there is no longer any such thing as "Duty Free" only "Duty Paid" and each EU Country has it's own rates for VAT & Duty etc.

If you travel from an EU Country to another Country outside the EU there is still "Duty Free" but the quantities you can purchase are severly restricted.

It may be 'duty free' but, as always, not 'profit free'.

Quite agree, especially on consumables like tobacco goods where in the UK around 80.00% of the retail price on cigarettes is VAT & Excise Duty but there is a lot less Tax on electrical goods so therefore less room to manoeuvre, but VAT alone will be 20.00% less.
