Hi,

I noticed this morning a spec of dust visible when I look through my viewfinder. It's there regardless of which lens I use.

Is this most likely a spec of dust on my mirror?

If so, any mirror cleaning tips? Or could dust really have got into the viewfinder somehow (BTW it's a 400D).

Many thanks in advance...

Could be on mirror or the focusing screen above it. Try a blower first to get rid of any dust inside in body recess, holding body face down helps the blown dust fall out. Then if further 'wiping' is required, same rules as lenses, be very gentle, especially on the mirror as the silver is on the surface, not underneath like a traditional mirror. Some people wont touch the mirror, but personally never had a problem as long as gentle. ;)

Dust is a fact of life. If it's sharp then it's on the focusing screen,I f it was on the mirror you probably wouldn't see it.

Best way to clean it of is with a blower. Simply remove the lens, hold the camera so that the lens mount is pointing down, and give the screen 3-4 blasts with the blower. Wait for a few seconds and then replace the lens.

My viewfinder has the odd spot of dust, but as it doesn't affect the image I only clean it when I need to

Cheers for the quick replies.

I was going to say, I guess as long as it doesn't affect the image I guess I should 'get over it' and try and ignore it! :)

Yeah try a blower, if that doesn't work and it's not a huge problem in your shots I wouldn't reccomend risking damage by wiping or anything - just clone it out in photoshop when it needs doing.

i have the same problem and tbh it drives me nuts. doesn't affect teh pics thoguh so i try to ignor it.

I had exactly the same problem with my 400D about 3 weeks ago. It turned out to be a bit of dust on the focussing screen. My blower took it straight off.

To clean it off you'll need to tip the camera upside down so you can see it. If the bit of dust is actually that big the view finder there is a good chance you will actually see it on the screen too.

Tip the camera upside down so you're kinda looking into the top of the camera. You should see a little screen with the 9 AF points on. Thats the focussing screen :)

Hope this helps
