Dust/bits inside lens

Firstly, I'm not too sure this is in the correct section, if not, could a mod please move it?

My girlfriend went to use her camera the other day, Canon 50d with the 18-200 IS lens. She noticed that there was some white bits inside of the lens (non mount end) under the glass.

There is also some bits on the outside of the glass by the ring (that displays the lens model, diameter etc) so I think it might have come through here as it doesn't look that good of a seal on there.

The lens will be 3 years old in April, does anyone know if:
1-This will still be covered by canon? (I'm thinking probably not)
2-If a camera shop would be able to repair it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Its normal for dust to get inside a lens, and wont need repairing, and wont show on images! The 18-200 isn't "sealed" as such.

Its only very expensive lenses that have decent sealing and even they can let dust in.
 
Zoom lenses are more prone to internal dust than prime lenses, and as Jim has said, it won't affect your images. A repairers would be able to strip it down and clean it, but it's only a matter of time before you start seeing more dust inside once again.
 
Cheers for the replies guys. I nipped it in to my local camera shop and they had a quick look at it but couldn't really do much with it. It appears that there are a few more bits now, one close to the glass and a couple further down the barrel.

I took a few pictures in bright conditions and there seems to be flecks on the image but that can be taken out with PP until she sends it back to Canon for a full strip down.

Sounds like what you are seeing is dust on the sensor not the dust on the lens, dust on the lens erik not show up.

As above, pretty much nothing on the lens will be shown in pictures, even a whacking great crack in the front element wont show up. You'd be throwing money away getting it stripped down.

Thanks, Very interesting read.

I will show her this before she sends it off then. I will also use one of my lenses on there to check the blemish that I was seeing. I thought with hers having a sensor cleaner inbuilt (50d) nothing would show up from that end.

Either way, lenses can take a fair bit of abuse!
 
Don't waste your money on a strip down, like I and others said, it won't show!

Sometimes I think I waste my breath....

And the in built sensor cleaner reduces dust, but can never eliminate it. All sensors are prone to it. I regualky have to use a rocket blower on my 50d sensor.

Good, it would be a complete waste! I'd start to look at sensor cleaning with a rocket blower (search for threads on here). It's cheap, safe and very easy to do and might eliminate the 'marks' on the images.
