I want to take a shot of the cathedral for my Dad, for Christmas. I use a wheelchair sometimes - nearly all the time in Durham.

Someone has told me that I can get to the riverside by going around by the shopping centre and around the outside - I couldn't get down to the riverside by going through the shopping centre, because of my wheels (I came out at the passport office and there were loads of steps). It was early afternoon too, so the sun was all wrong anyway. I don't know my way around Durham though, shameful for living in County Durham nearly all of my life, I know!

I'm just looking for suggestions of a good vantage point and suggestions of time if you don't mind helping please?

I'm going to try the riverside again, before 10am one morning, but other than that, I'm kinda stuck for ideas of places. Newcastle was my old stomping ground, but I moved back to County Durham last year.

Do you drive, you can get down to the riverside next the passport office by car. Then onto the footpath along the riverside from there. If you don't, head towards North Road from the passport office roundabout. Take your first left as if heading into the car park but continue past the entrance and the road takes you down to the riverside.
Once on the riverside head south under the bridges and keep going until you come to the weir. About 400 metres. Perfect spot near the old buildings at the weir. The best time is late evening about an hour before the sun goes down, on a clear day it lights up the whole west side of the cathedral. If you have any trouble let me know and I'll see if I can come and help.

Your welcome
This is the view you will get, just incase it's not what your looking for..

Wharton Park is also accessable and gives a view of the city including the castle, cathedral and the bridge depending on how you frame it.

Just wanted to thank you all again and post an update with a shot.

I went today and it was reasonably easy to get there with my chair, though I didn't dare go higher up the bank at the end. LOL

I took a canny few shots, but here's one of them, my favourite from the 3 or 4 I've processed, so far.
