Has anyone visited this in previous years?

I just happen to be in Durham on the Saturday night of the festival and wondered if it would be a worthwhile photographic opportunity.

Yes, it certainly is very worthwhile. When I went (a few years ago) it was challenging but not impossible to use a tripod in the busier areas. This year they are organising a ticket system for the central areas during certain hours, which may help.

Thanks.

On these quick weekend visits I usually take just the Fuji X30. I'm unlikely to have a tripod with me but could drag along the D7100 (not renowned for great ISO quality) and 35mm 1.8 or 16-85 3.5/5.6.

Handholding (I don't have the shakes yet) do you think I would get away any of the above.

When I visited I shot on film with ISO800 film, and a very old Leica Digilux 2 that is limited to ISO400. So if you can go to a much higher ISO then you have a good chance. I suggest you just go to enjoy the event and if you get some images, consider it a bonus.
Also you could search for some images on flickr and get some clues from their exif data.

Kevin thanks.

Don't know why I didn't think of flickr.....just had a look and it does look like tripod territory. Will take your advice and just aim to enjoy the show and maybe get the odd shot worth keeping.

Thanks again.

Regards
Neil.
