I have a Sony Vio Laptop Which I use for all my photography and editing but each time i go into a folder there are hundreds of duplicate folders like ghost folders, they just create themselves. i spend hours deleting them but they just reappear. Does anyone know what the problem is every copy starts with VCM.

Can you give us a short list of the complete folder names
the path they site in (eg: c:\documents and settings\...)
are they hidden (slightly faded in colour?)
whats in them?

hi, the path is c\users\user\pictures, name vcm-s-kf-repr-324x480 jpg
the folders are slightly faded in colour and they contain two copies of a photo. They seem to copy every single photo in my folders and it takes me ages to delete them but the just return of there own accord and my resycle bin sometimes holds thousands of deleted filed.
thanks

Sounds like a photo management application then. The folders are hidden because you don't need to see them. From the filenames, they are not quite thumbnails, but smaller versions of the photos. From the pathname, you are using Vista, so perhaps its inbuilt into Vista, I'm not sure.

I would hide the hidden folders (if that makes sense) and let the program or Vista do what it needs to.

Sounds like the backup directories from Picasa.

yeah, i was going to say something like Picasa.

Vista doesn't natively do that.

This ^^.
It will be a 3rd party app. Vista may keep a ghost copy if you were editting inhouse but that would disappear once the image file has been saved and closed down.

But then again your PC may just have some kind of 'duplication disfunctionality', afterall it seems to be duplicating threads....http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=170939 ;)

What software are you using for editing the pictures?

Tim

sounds like you might have used an application to either generate an online gallery, or you've used an application to batch resize a load of pictures.

I think these are database thumbnail files used by elements or similar picture browsing programs.

Seems to be Vaio software.. http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?p=418209#post418209
Although it doesn't seem to fix it for everyone.

I've read through the posts at the elements discussion and don't see the solution to the vcm file generation listed, at least from my perspective. These files make you go crazy.

I have windows 7, Sony Vio all-in-one with elements9, picassa and photobucket. The problem happened before I started using Picassa. If Jonas answer is the solution, I don't know where to go to uncheck the apps. Then someone said they tried Jonas solution and the items we're already unchecked. Any NEW information would be greatly appreciated.
