I think I may be being quite stupid here...any pointers would be helpful ...have downloaded all my images off the I-mac to a portable hard drive ( wd passport) as a back up...when I re-connect the hd to the mac it shows a file "photos"...when I click onto this ( to check that the photos are there) aperture automatically opens and displays it's library...so I don't know if I am seeing the hard drive images ,or the existing library.
Anyone have an idea as to how I can check the contents of the hd without aperture opening ?...I don't have access to another computer to check. Thanks in advance , steve.

Try just opening the hard drive and see if the images are there. Aperture has set itself as the default app for that type of image. But if you right click on the image and select "Open With" and chose another app, e.g. Preview, it will open the image in Preview.

Can't seem to find how to change aperture default...but I can see a choice between aperture library and wd hard drive when launching aperture...so it would look like the images are on the wd hard drive!...anyway thanks for the replies guys!

It maybe that what you are trying to open is the aperture database and can't be opened with another application.

What is the file extension?
