Hi everyone, wondering if I could get some advice ... I currently have a fuji finepix but have decided it is time to get a proper camera! I used to have an EOS film SLR but unfortunately my lenses don't work on the DSLR ... Thanks for that Canon!! I am looking for a semi pro DSLR and the ones I've seen so far are the Nikon D300s, D700 and the EOS7D all nice, tidy prices!!! I've seen good comments on the Nikon D90 but I've been advised, it is better to get a full frame camera ... can anyone advise me on what to buy?? I've been into Jessops but some independent advice would be cool. Its for travel photography, wildlife and portraits. HELP!

If you previously owned a Canon and liked it, it would make sense to buy another...

That said, the D300s and D700 are superb cameras and will be suitable for virtually any photographic situation you may find yourself approaching, as long as you have lenses to match...
 
If your lenses are old FD mount you can buy an FD to EOS adapter and still use manual focus. :thumbs:

That could be expensive advice :bat: lenses s well as bodies tend to be much more expensive (though a better long term investment) for full frame cameras There are many pro's and cons to FF also, I certainly would of thought you'd be better off with crop for wildlife for example. (and og the three you've listed only the d700 is actually full frame anyways)

The pro/semi pro models you listed are also lacking features you may find useful on your firt DSLR and may end up as a step backwards for your first body. To me, a D90 seems an excellent choice

Thanks for your advice. I am more tempted by the Canon because I know my way around it but the reason I'm being swayed towards the Nikon is that I'm under the impression they're the better camera. Please correct me if I'm wrong! As for manual focus, I can't rely on my eyesight so that's a no go!! Thanks guys!

Personal preference - there's virtually no difference apart from ergonomics and layout of the controls and menu-system...

At similar price-points, the lenses and cameras are virtually indistinguishable in terms of Image-quality.

But we all have our favourites...lol

at the moment that may be true, but 3 years ago it wasn't, and it'll cycle round again. Lenses are a far longer term investment than bodies. If you know the canon and like the canon I would go that way
 
Ok well I don't want you two to be fighting over it ha! I agree about the lenses that's why I'm so gutted my Canon ones won't work!! Got 5 great lenses, so annoying. Anyway, I'm over that. So with the 40D is that gonna be good enough quality for me to blow my images up to about A2? ...
 
I don't know about the 40D, but either the D300s or the D700 will enlarge from a JPEG-High to A1+ or larger...

From a RAW you can go as big as a house...literally...

This is a subject that comes up quite a lot and maybe a search might find some various advise.

I still maintain that its always good to walk into a shop and try one for your self, get the feel of it in your hands first, Canon and Nikon can feel very different.

I think going for a jump to full frame such as the D700 (exspensive move)might be a little to much. I would advise the D90 or indeed the D300s, i can't comment on the Canon as i have never used one.

You will probly need to think about what you are going to shoot so that you get a decent lens to cover that subject, such as potraits or Landscapes...

If they're Canon lenses then they will still work on a digital body, the mount and the protocol haven't changed.

If they're third party lenses then you may well have a problem.

The best one is a Sigma lens ... the others are all Canon, will the autofocus still work though?? Will be taking wildlife, portraits and landscapes over the next couple of months in answer to your comment, Rocket. I also agree about the jump to a full frame but what I don't wanna do is buy a lower spec and find that in 6 months I wish I'd bought the higher spec ... I'll look at both and see which I prefer
 
I think thats a decision you are going to have to make your self, however i have seen those that are going from a D700 to a D300s .
I have had the D80 and the D300 and both can cope with all i want, the D300 having the edge.
something like full frame is more for the pro, but am sure there are many out there that use something like the D300/300s and fulfill s all there needs.......

Having said all that it might well be that your present lens's will do the job on a new canon, saving you some ££££s.
 
:canon:The Canon lenses will work with all functions, the Sigma may work at full aperture, I have several Sigma lenses from EOS film caneras, some work, others only work at full aperture, still autofocus, OK.

Go Canon, But I'm a bit biased:canon:.

The 40D is a great camera, I am biased thou :). Im sure a few other members will back up its quality. IMO it can print out up to A2 with good quality results, other people will say it won't because it only has a 10.1MP sensor it wont print to a photo quality at A2. It all depends on the viewing distance, lighting and printer (upscaling technology) used. I have done quite a few prints at A3 and the results are great IMO.
 
What camera have you got? If its an EOS then the lenses should work on the DSLR.
