DSLR Skills 2012

Just in case anyone hasn't received the e-mail, they've extended the deadline for the first homework:

Hello

We’ve had a few teething problems surrounding the Module 1 homework gallery, so we are going to give everyone who missed the deadline a chance to upload their homework.

The Gallery is now upon and will remain open until 11.59pm on Monday 2 April. That gives you one week to read this email and upload your photo. The photo should already be shot and on your computer so uploading should be a quick and easy process. Please follow the link below to the gallery.

Please note that this is the only time any of the homework galleries will be re-opened for upload. If you miss future deadlines you will not have the opportunity to upload again.

I like the catch lights in the eyes and I think the lighting is really nice. I would maybe have edited the black thing (bottom right) out somehow!

Marsha, Manda, if you want to meet up somewhere for a portrait session I would still be up for it.
I'd be up for it, just a bit busy right now having started a new job yesterday!

I tried taking a portrait of my little boy this evening! I may post it on the portrait forum for some critique!

Thanks Marsha. Unfortunately the black thing is the model's knee. I thought it was good idea for her to pose by pulling up her legs. But it didn't really work. I think the knee needs to either be there properly - and obvious what it is - or not at all. You live and learn eh!

OK - fine perhaps later in the year...

Are we using this thread to discuss/C&C images for the course? I'd like to post my homework 2 shot but don't know if that's what this thread is for?

What a brilliant gappy smile:-) I like how her hair almost matches the brickwork behind! I'd say my only criticism is the lighter brickwork or whatever it is right in the centre of the shot! Could you clone that out?

Obviously I'm no expert on portraits! Let's see if anyone else has anything to add.

Cheers Marsha. It's actually a wooden fence, and the grey thing is a fence post (note to self: look closer next time!).

It can be cloned out quite easily, but I wasn't sure that met the brief, so didn't do it.

I've submitted it as is, but learned from it :)

I don't think it's a major problem and it certainly doesn't take anything away from your beautiful niece and her lovely blue eyes. I'm sure (in years to come) she will only look on in disgust that you've got a picture of her looking gummy;-)

On a plus side, at least you've submitted something. I need to get a shot this weekend, if only my over tired grumpy kids would oblige!!!

I finally had a go at a portrait shoot with my mother in law as my model! We even managed to ersuade my daughter to sit still AND smile for a nano second! I posted it here for some C&C but got one reply! I'm just choosing now which I prefer!!!

What do you reckon?

Hi - I've just signed up for the course, but given that the deadline for submissions is just a few days away, how do I find out what the task is?

Well, you are supposed to buy the magazine I think.
Alternatively, look here...

Thanks I'll get the mag next time I'm in town. But does it mean I have to use either my kit lens (which I never take with me) or a prime? Usually I just have a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom with me.

Oh dear - I unsubscribed from the thread by accident, didn't buy the mag, aren't near a computer or the Internet with no proper photo to upload!!! How can this of happened? I'll post some thing any way once I sort myself out! Cheers Mandy

PS. before you feel sorry for me, I'm on my hols -hence the confusion!

Thanks Mike, I went with number one:

I am tweaking one of the other ones following advice on that thread, but I didn't want to submit an over tweaked one to this project as the I'm not sure it's allowed!

Love the colors, clarity and view point here! I'm not sure what tweaking these images need, but *** on the forum definitely threw their full arsenal at the first submission! Cheers Mandy

So I think I accidentally shot my module three shot today! My hubby was throwing my son in the air, I snapped away and caught him against the bright sky! I've not seen it on computer yet, so fingers crossed it's not rubbish!

How's everyone else doing?

Here's mine for month 3 (silhouette using metering modes NOT PP). Not one of my best, but I do like that it's got some detail left in the silhouette.

I think the little bit of detail is needed, you don't want it completely black. Well, I don't think so. I'm undecided which shot to use:thinking: I have the one of my son mid flight or one I took of the sunset last week in between clouds! I'll have to get my bum in gear and choose!

Put them both up on here? A second opinion can help sometimes :)

Here they are:

1. My son in flight! Mmmm, maybe another entry for my 52:nuts:

I had to crop this to remove a caravan on the left. Also used the burn tool to hide another caravan on the right. I had to keep the gull in though, I like it for some reason!

2. Sunset.

I was out one evening trying to shoot Red Kites for my 52. It was inbetween down pours and this sunset presented itself! This is as shot, no editing at all.

What do you reckon? C&C always welcome.

The one of your son, deffo! Lovely shot :)

Mind you, in the Flickr group I've been told that my shot isn't a silhouette because you can see detail in the mill! Apparently it's an underexposed shot, not a silhouette, even though the blades ARE completely black. I can see some of your lad's hair and other detail, so it may be a no no!!!! ;)

Really?

1.
a two-dimensional representation of the outline of an object, as a cutout or configurational drawing, uniformly filled in with black, especially a black-paper, miniature cutout of the outlines of a famous person's face.
2.
the outline or general shape of something: the slim silhouette of a skyscraper.
3.
a dark image outlined against a lighter background.

I'd say you fit option 3! The mill is under exposed, the sky is lovely, isn't that the point?

My module 3 upload -

Damn!! Wish I had see this earlier in the year, some great entries.

Matt

Hi Matt, do you mean you wish you had seen this thread or read about the DSLR skills course? Module four closes tonight, if you have any night street/ building shots get it uploaded!!!

Well I was just about to give up with this module. I even tried to upload an image I took of a Typhoon taking off at night but the website failed to work! Probably fortuitous as last night I decided to go to see MIB 3 at the cinema and took my camera bag (as you do) When we came out it was still fairly light, almost daylight but fading fast. Didcot high street was fairly quiet and the bunting and jubilee flags were still flying and I took this:

(I'll upload it to Flickr tonight and post it here properly then)

I only had my gorilla pod wrapped around a sign post so not as stable as I would like so this isn't as sharp as I would have liked, but it's better than nothing and fits the homework requirements.

How is everyone else doing?

I wish I had seen about the course, I'm guessing that you can just join in at any time??

Matt

Yes definitely, like I said module four closes tonight at midnight should you happen to have a night shot or want to do one this evening :)

Module 5 is a landscape shot (not a city scape though)! The new magazine arrived yesterday so will be out on sale shortly with all the details.

Once you sign up they send emails with video links to assist you. I can pm you links if you want them.
