I picked up a used DSLR last year and got it at a reasonable price, probably due to the falling out of favour of them with a good few. Just looking at used DSLR prices now, and they seem to be holding their value, if not creeping up slightly to what they were last year. I thought most were ditching their DSLR's, in favour of mirrorless. Pity, thought I could pick up another DSLR for an amount that would not hurt my pocket. ;)

Got a lot of doors in my house that need holding open, there is always a use for a boat anchor of a camera :ROFLMAO:
 
I did have half an eye on used DSLR prices last year, this was in the hopes of pouncing on one that I wanted, when I had the spare cash to do so.
But now that I checked on things, and prices have crept up. So I don't fancy buying used at the moment, as I think prices will drop again.

Really?

Haven't seen that at all quite the opposite a mate of mine has been trying to get shot of a D750 with only 4k clicks for months, he also has a D700 with only 12k clicks and has tried getting rid of that for the best part of 6 months. Couldn't sell it even after dropping the D700 to £250 and has gave up now.

I was wondering if that was the reason. But surely on that assumption, people will be trading in their old DSLR's, thus creating a glut of unwanted bodies?
 
Depends on the camera, brand etc.
Some cameras that were popular will probably hold their value at a certain level.
Its same with old SLRs for example, some are still worth a good bit of money and some can be had from a bargain bucket.

I was looking at camera shops selling used gear, and the prices they were listing their DSLR,s . I know private classified ads would be quoting much lower prices, but no cover such as warranty or condition of camera etc. Maybe that is why some can't shift their gear.

Out of interest how much is he asking for the D750 ????
 
I guess manufacturers like Canon may have reached as far as they can go with DSLR's, so to continue their income stream, concentrate on mirrorless, discontinue the EF lenses, in the hope that folk will go for new shiny toys that basically do exactly the same job as a DSLR.

MPB have a D700 described as excellent, with 8k for £399

I must be looking in the wrong places then. ;)

I suppose some would think it worthwhile, in spending a little more on a used camera from a shop, with the added peace of mind the camera will have been checked over, and given a warranty.

Without going too far into the DSLR v Mirrorless debate I think that mirrorless moves things on more than basically doing exactly the same job. They can obviously do exactly the same job, as in take pictures, but IMO mirrorless goes further providing more information, opportunities, accuracy and consistency. I think it's like the move years ago from a typewriter (SLR) to a word processor (DSLR) to a pc (mirrorless.) I think it is that much of a leap given the additional information, abilities and consistency that mirrorless brings over a DSLR which was pretty much an SLR with a display and a circuit board containing an imaging chip bolted on.

I do think that DSLR's can offer good value but just as I moved away from film I've moved on from DSLR's now and would only recommend one to someone who's more mature and has grown up with photography, rather than a PlayStation and smartphone owning younger person who may expect more than a DSLR can deliver.

no they keep slowly dropping, it wasnt all that long ago a 1DX was 1600 and now you can get them for 800 easily
 
I'd agree with the OP. I've been keeping an eye on D750 prices intending to upgrade from my D610 for the focus.

Expecting the price to drop as the D780 takes share and the mirrorless scramble continues.

Yes it has dropped, but not by very much and people are still expecting good money when they sell.

I was under the impression prices had crept up since last year, unless this is with the more desirable bodies, whichever they may be. :thinking:
 
Everything has its place and if I were in the market for another dSLR I'd be delighted with any reduction in prices. :naughty:

Would have made MPB a nice healthy profit, possibly even more percentage wise, than a the shop had of done when sold new.
 
There was a bit of a bounce back from a couple of years ago, and I suspect it's reaction to mirrorless along with Covid making people want more cameras.

It's worth remembering that cameras will take the same kind of pictures that model always did, but also that better designs will allow you to create images that earlier models would not. Holding on to old kit is no reason to be proud, but also there's no point in upgrading if what you have can't be bettered for what you do.
 
Every camera I have ever bought, it was bought at the right time for me. This was usually when they had an offer on, or when camera no longer had an interest from buyers and was a slow mover, so I bought then, once or twice the price went up shortly after.

I already have enough cameras to take photos of what I like taking photos of, and that is the family and the pets, and casual street photos.
But have have two places left on my shelf, and one is for another DSLR and a Compact camera with a viewfinder.

Not doing anything about a Compact at the moment, as I don't think it is the right time for me to make a move.
But I did think now was a good time to buy a DSLR, or so I thought that was the case.

How about a range finder? :D

If there's one thing I do miss from the film era it's a nice manual RF. Another I liked was the Olympus Trip and it's zone focus settings.
 
I noticed a second hand 5D4 offered for about the same price as I bought mine new 3 years ago. of course it may not have been sold. I intend to hang on to my DSLR even though I am using a Sony ML for my main camera now.

Yes, maybe some models are holding their prices, but with the digital cameras I look at I just see the usual downward trend. You can pick up a user D810 for under £700, or a D800 for under £500 (add maybe £100 for one in nicer condition). On the mirrorless side, I've just seen a Z6 for under £900.

If you want something that keeps its value, buy a film camera. Apart from a few Leicas, some large format models, and toy cameras, they aren't making any more of them. Solid mechanical cameras like the Nikon FM series never seem to lose their secondhand value. High end AF SLRs lost maybe 2/3 of theirs in the early digital era, but then stabilised and are now on the way up. Cult cameras like the Yashica and Contax compacts go for crazy prices. Some Leicas have seen Bitcoin-style increases recently. Until a few years ago, you could pick up a Leica M6 for under £1000, the price they'd held for the previous decade (I paid £800 for mine). Today, there are dealers asking over £2500 for a nice one. This is more than you'd pay for any of Leica's first three digital M models.

I was thinking of another DSLR primary to bring all my old lenses back to life, and one that has more focus points then my current DSLR,s.

To me monetary resale value is secondary. I still have the first camera I ever had which I got for my 10th birthday so if I'd restricted myself to using that and that alone I'd have saved a lot of money but the gear and it's potential have moved on and film is not for me anymore. It would be nice if things kept their value but you'd need a crystal ball and to limit yourself to kit that retains its value means limiting yourself in other ways too, too many to make it an attractive proposition for me although I could just about live with my Sony A7 and film era primes which as long as they're not spoilt by fungus or smashed will still be worth something long after the electronics in AF lenses have crumbled rendering them paper weights.

I also still have my film camera, it has a roll of B&W in it at the moment, only managed three frames and put it back away in the cupboard, as it seems too much hassle at the moment.

Well, monetary value is secondary to everything unless you're a dealer or a speculator hoping to turn a profit. Nobody else (apart from collectors) should buy a film camera unless they want to shoot film. For those who do (generally alongside digital), it's interesting that film gear is currently at least holding its value, including those manual focus primes. The flipside of this is that some of the gear is now becoming unaffordable. As well as cameras, there are cult lenses from the film era, sold at inflated prices, often to mirrorless users. Some of these lenses weren't highly regarded at the time, but now have a new market in people who enjoy their 'character'. Others were superb lenses then and remain so now, though in the meantime mass market lenses have come a long way. An unremarkable lens of the quality we expect in the days of 50 megapixel sensors may well be more than competitive with some of the legendary glass of the past.

That is what I was thinking with DSLR's, supposedly sales on the decline as the masses seem to be opting for mirrorless now, so prices of DSLR's should fall.
But that does not seem to be the case, prices still seem much higher than last year, or at least for used equipment that is, not sure on new prices though.

I wonder if it's a reflection of non- toggers wanting cameras and assuming that DSLRs are thing to have.

Just had a quick look at new DSLR's , and prices seem to be holding well, with not much signs off offers or anything.

Which models are you looking at? Prices of discontinued FX Nikons are pretty reasonable, and I don't remember them being cheaper a year ago. MPB seem have a glut of them. The D810 was originally a £2700 camera, so £700-£900 for a body that was still current 4 years ago is (if anything) lower than I might expect if there were no competition from mirrorless.
