Yes
I am off to india tomorrow, and i was wondering how to transport my camera?

At the moment, i am thinking of just taking my camera and my 18-55VR in the cabin and have my other lenses and camera stuff in my hold luggage.

I know that the X-Ray machines are safe for the cameras but i have heard that the static created can whipe the sensor, so should i ask for it to be hand searched?

mine's been around the world. in my hand luggage, scanned through x ray - no probs :woot:

think thats an urban myth. You'll be fine with an X-Ray. If this were true most electronics just wouldn't function after going through one

wipe the sensor?

personally id keep EVERYTHING of value in your hand luggage. ive seen how those baggage "handlers" treat hold luggage... they may as well try and drop kick it all into the hold.

Ok cool thanks, i was just told that thing about the sensor being wiped by my local camera friend man chap.

My Nikon D40 has went through security fine, but it usually says 'Please remove large electrical items and place them in the box' which is what I did, and they went through the X-Ray machine fine... If you're really worried, there's no harm in asking them, and if they say you have to put it through the machine, don't argue - if it breaks, you can always sue them. :)

I have a video clip of them throwing luggage and dropping bags, etc :)

Avoid putting your camera gear in the hold, apart from the possibility of it getting lost & not joining you on the flight, ....................

Especially if you're flying from the US where they insist on you removing luggage locks.

What is there to wipe its not film You be OK its only x-ray not a large EMF

Carry all of your camera gear in your hand luggage. Mine's been around the world many times and in that time my hold luggage has probably failed to turn up 30 - 40 times and has been lost completely 3 times.

Don't take the risk.

carry it in your hand ludgage... just dont try and pursuade the antiguan border control that you dont want to remove the lens from your camera...not because you have drugs in it... but because you might get dust on the sensor... :(

If it wipes the sensor then just make sure your not taking a photo at the time. Sounds like a myth. I'd stuff all I could in my hand luggage personally.

dont belive hold baggage is scanned, just has swabbs/scanners/sniffer dogs for explosive and drugs.

Before you board though watch out for Samuel L...

Enough is enough, I've had it with these monkey fightin togs on this monday to friday plane. Everybody strap in...We're about to open some freakin' windows!

Hold luggage is scanned, it goes through the scanner just after you check it in. Sniffer dogs won't detect electronic circuitry or firearms. luggage is only swabbed if flagged as suspicious.

Pics from the air are cool :)

Cool shot Ray :)

LOL Ano :D

Never - ever - put your gear in the suitcase (or equivalent), as hand luggage you can ensure its safe and handled well. A mate of mine spent a summer as a luggage thrower, as they call it, camera equipment is probably the last thing you'd want at their mercy. That or crystal :)

Mine always goes as hand luggage, at worse it weighs about 10kg :D

Read this for a laugh linky

I took all of my gear in my hand baggage when I went to New York in April. Kit consisted of Canon 350D with grip, kit lens, chargers, Sigma 10-20 in the camera bit of my Kata Dr-465 and in the top compartment I managed to get documents, money, food, drink, jumper, phone, ipod, notebook, 2 magazines and a host of medicines including Epipen injections.

Bag went through customs fine (the only thing that got picked up on was the epipens), camera is fine and the whole lot was just under the weight limit.

I always take my camera and lenses with me in my hand luggage and just put rest of my kit, tripod/charger and spare batteries, in the main luggage

Hi i work for security at heathrow and putting camera stuff through the xray is fine. Dont have to take it out the bag either as the new machines are good enough to see through them! They wont allow hand searches to electrical items! If it dont go through the xray its not going!
Also all hold luggage is xrayed and not treated as nicely shall we say!!
My iphone goes through the xray everyday and also we have airport photographers who's equipment gets scanned everyday and they would soon complain if there sensor was damaged!
Hope this has helped
Lee

X-Rays should be fine. It's strong magnetic fields that can cause problems.
Storage cards and other drives, except optical which I would expect to be ok also

Have either of you two noticed the date of the original post?

I've never had a free sensor clean when transporting my gear by plane. Am I missing out?

I always carry my camera gear in my hand luggage. Have you seen the way your hold package are thrown around even if it has fragile labels?

Why would someone respond to a 17 month old thread which didn't need responding to?

Because I only noticed an update to it the other day, to which I responded.
