DSLR for a novice!

Hi there all!

I'm just starting out in photography having bought a nice camera (one step down from a DSLR) about 8 months ago. I figured i'd start by learning how to use a reasonably simple camera first before taking the plunge into more serious photography.

I have been browsing this forum for a few days to try and get a feel for what is a good DSLR for a complete beginner like me. I'm happy to build my knowledge to start with then upgrade again when i have a bit more cash for a better camera.

My budget isn't fantastic unfortunately (£300) but i'm happy obviously to look around for a second hand camera but one that will last me for a year or so.

The general feel i think is that Nikon and Canon are the leaders in the DSLR market and i'd be happy to hear others views on what cameras are very good in this range for a complete novice like me!

I'm a newbie, and got given a Sony A200kit for christmas..

I'm sure that the Cannon and Nikon fans would obviously say otherwise, but I reckon for newbie it seems pretty spot on..
 
Well for a £300 budget and only looking to keep it for a year you won't go wrong with a second hand Canon 400D with a standard zoom.

Just hope that luckless can stretch their budget that far :)

400D, two lenses and a grip for that sort of money has got to be a steal...
 
Thanks for the posts everyone - thats got me thinking! How much roughly would a separate lens cost me to go with the 400D (again second hand is fine!)? Sorry, i know i'm asking some silly questions but i'm very much still learning! The ebay deal looks a good one too! Decisions decisions!
 
I recommend the Nikon D40.

It's only about £240~ and if you're budget is £300 you could possible squeeze in a second hand lens, tripod or some nice accessories to go with your new camera.

Depends what you are looking for
an 18-55 kit lens should be around £50 as should the "nifty fifty" ( 50mm)
But the prices are fluctuating fast at the moment so its difficult to tell almost 1 day to the next. It seems the a canon 75-300 can be had for about the £100 mark not as good as the 70-300 but about a third of the price.
You could also look at the sigma range ( cheaper than canon but a lot of people swear by them)
edit have a look around the for sale items that should give you an idea of prices
