I have a max of £400 for a camera and memory(not bothered about bags)
had OM10 went digital compact route and currently have a Kodak Z740 which is good, has manual control but not an SLR ,camera is for family pictures, holiday snaps, sport and a zoom at later date.
I have narrowed it down to these but cant decide so any help is appreciated
ooo and live view for the MRS

Sony A300 on sale at moment and can buy minolta beercan at later date

Canon 1000D ticks the boxes and can get zoom later

Nikon D60 ticks the boxes but lenses need motor so expensive for zoom later

and a bit of an outsider but ticks more boxes for money

olympus E420 dual lens kit with bag and memory seems to be best bet at the moment

really after a few pros and cons from owners

Cheers

Hi welcome. The most ipmportant thing for you to do is to go and play with all your choices plus don't forget pentax and see which feels best for you. One persons pro is anothers con so don't get hung up on what we like, YOU must decide.

Also don't get stuck on lenses need motors. Manually focussing is not difficult and is how all us olduns had to do it origainally.

Remember all the cameras will take good photos but, you make them great/

Good advice, go to a shop, take your time and if both of you are going to use it, both have a play. Some controls/menus just seem more instinctive than others and ease of use is important.

Do also consider what you might want to do in a year or two's time and buy into a system that would accomodate that without having to start again. Just needs some research. Good luck :)

As said above go to the shops and have a feel for what you like dont buy the first one you touch and if possible talk to staff and customers in the shops you go too most toggers are keen to discuss cameras and lens etc. Good luck with your search

Been and had a play with them all and there isnt a lot of difference ,think the A300 on sale at moment will get the nod for IS and live view

any more thoughts

We had the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't decide which camera to get! Had a look at both the Nikon D60 and similar priced Sony's. In the end went for the Nikon D60, as my boyfriend has two playstations break and wasn't sure of the reliabilty. However, I don't see that that would really be a problem as long as you have a warranty etc and loads of people will never have had a problem, he just felt better getting a Nikon.

So, in the end we went for the D60, fab camera. Exactly what we need and is easy to use. Although it doesn't have a motor built in, this wasn't really an issue for us as a beginner. Lens cost the earth anyway, so we went for the camera that felt best for us, as at the end of the day I think that's more important. We also got a Sigma 70-300 lens with macro too, for around £130which is great for wildlife photography.

Also, the D60 doesn't have live view, which again, isn't a problem for me as you just use the viewfinder. And, from what i've read it can use up the battery quite quickly.

So my advice would be, just have others have said, to go into a camera shop and see which feels the best. There probably all as good as each other and just think about what it is you want from the camera! Sorry, jsut realised you have already been into a shop, then go for the Sony if it has what everything you want!

Job done, walked out of high street store with sony a300 18-70 kit lens,55 mm uv filter ,4gb extreme 3 and a centon bag(not what i would have picked but its okay)
for ..... after a haggle £320

thanks for advice
