Dropped my Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED lens today, well rolled off the sofa
Won't focus :'(

Sounds like a screw is rattling around inside, manual focus ring is slipping

Was going to take it to Fixation tomorrow as they are near to me :'(

Anyone got an idea on cost or anywhere else that won't cost to much

Thanks in advance

Oh dear - sorry to read that! There may be cheaper places around than Fixation, but I'd be hesitant to recommend using them. Hopefully it will be an easy fix, but you'd want it done properly and by people who know what they're doing, so stick with someone you trust.

If Fixation is close to you then I'd drop it off to them. They are honest and reliable.

You'll get a quote, and can make a decision. It might not be worth repairing - although I'm not sure of the replacement value - quite often you'll find even if the parts cost is low the labour to repair throws it.

Of my recent lens repairs (2 at Fixation and 1 at Nikon) they prices have ranged from £125 to £250 although the more expensive one had a VR unit replacement as well.

Of course if it is insured for accidental damage then you can always claim for it, depending on value & your excess.

I know you are right, If it was my 18-105 I could just bin it but it's to good not to get it fixed, just want an idea of cost

It's hard to give an idea of cost as all sorts could be wrong after dropping a lens. You may be lucky and it'll just be a couple of small parts that need replacing and having the internals realigned which could be less than £100. Or you could be faced with a huge list of problems like I had with my 24-70 which cost in excess of £600 to repair.

This is why insurance is useful, no matter how much or how little gear you have.

My excess (Home Insurance) is £200 so not going to help if it's under that

Guess I'm just going to have to wait and see what they say at Fixation

It may be worth looking at camera insurance, I'm sure the excess won't be that high. My last policy with photoguard had no excess, I just sent the lens off, sent photoguard the repair quote and they handled the rest.

I know it doesn't help now with your lens, but it may be worth it for the future, accidents happen, even to the most careful people.

You are right I should as been buying a far bit of kit lately, I'll see what they quote me
Thanks

Edit Photoguard Standard Quote with PL £1M £3000 cover no excess. £93 Pro quote £133

It is a good price, if you think that if you drop a lens it can cost £100+ very very easily to repair.

Mine cost around the same last year, maybe a bit more, and after they paid out for my repairs which were in excess of £600, constant insurance for me is a no brainier.

Took it in to Fixation this morning, have to wait 2 days for the estimate

It's a writeoff :'(:'(
Fixaion quote £438 :'(

That's more than I can buy a new one for

Gutted :'(:'(

Bad luck on that, I suppose it's the labor plus parts taking it over the price of a new one.

Labour was £100
Have to work out if I should go for the same or something else, really not sure what to do.

If it helps Grays of Westminster had new 70-300 VRs for £385 when I bought one a few weeks back. They also had some fully warrantied second hand ones.

As far as I see, it's either replace like for like or upgrade to the 70-200 (f4 or f2.8 versions), anything else would be a downgrade.

Thanks for your reply. I'll have a look

Hi Helen, I can't really help with any recommendation, but saw that you were defending me against a 'real photographer' in another thread, so I'd at least like to say I'm sorry to hear about your mishap.

I would hazard a small comment saying that maybe with the D600 you don't need the same focal length as with older cameras, as you can crop in quite nicely. So if you find an excellent 200mm lens you really like, I think it would not be a problem, reach-wise. You still wouldn't have to get much closer to people than now, in my humble opinion.

Thank you :)

I had a 70-300 but sold that to get a sigma 70-200 f2.8 to use on my d90. The 70-300 was great, especially in decent light.

I will probably be selling (probably for around 300) it in a couple of months in the classifieds to get a Nikon vr 70-200 but have had some nice results from the sigma. Just wanting a bit of vr/is!!

Until I saw that silly comment, I was almost willing to send Helen an old 70-300 for free that's been sitting in a drawer for ages now and only really gets used to lend to people who've never used anything more than their kit lens. Worthless second hand, so its off the scrap heap (or at least been sent off for recycling today).

Sorry to hear of your loss Helen. Sure you'll find something. Don't forget insurance if you don't have it should definitely be on your shopping list.

What a strange thing to type.

Ivan S... I think you missed the reference that he was having a go at me... trying to read too much into and take me out of context in something where I used the word 'real photographer' the the other day.

Might have been a little bit of a rant back then ;), but it was all in a good cause, encouraging people to take photos rather than pixel peep etc.

As far as I was concerned, that little debate is in the past. Somewhat disappointing to see it being held against me on a totally unrelated thread.

Its alright, I get the message. This is my last post on this entire forum.

Aaannd back on topic...

These lenses appear on ebay outlet stores from time to time (forget which ones, currys or argos perhaps) for around the £250 mark, they're open box but a few folks on here have picked them up and said they're pretty much as new. Might be worth doing a search in the Shopping Suppliers and Bargains forum for more info :)
