That gut wrenching, heart stopping feeling as you see as your best and favourite lens head towards the concrete with a THUD

Gutted is an understatement, it was attached to camera and slipped off my shoulder about 2 foot to hard concrete floor nose / lens firts

Non of the glass lens's has been broken, the lens still works as it should, even IS, the black plastic rim at front of lens is a little squidded and flattened. The zoom has gone VERY tight to move. All this happened on my birthday to lol.

I was in central Manchester at the time, so went straight around to LCE to see what they said the guy was really helpful and sympathetic, he couldn say if it was repairable. It has now been sent off to see if it can be repaired, i am waiting in anticipation for a phone call / email with a yes no verdict and a quote for repair (i never renewed my camera insurance :'( )

Has anyone else had similar issues and what was the out come.

Cheers

I'd expect a several hundred quid bill. Friend dropped a 100-400L on carpet. Less than a foot of drop as it rolled out of a bag but that was quoted as being about £200 to repair and potentially more. Zoom collar went tight and there was a tiny dink on the outside of the lens. She didn't bother getting it repaired as it still sort of works.

If it nose dived onto concrete I'd expect it to be a write off to be honest. If it was attached to a camera I'd also expect the camera mount to be damaged potentially too.

Check your household insurance if you have any, mine covers accidental damage on camera gear as well as other less interesting stuff.

+1 for this, have a look, mine covers every piece of my camera equipment up to a value of £2000 per item

Since I dropped my camera lens lens first onto the cobbles of Bruges I've made sure my stuff is insured in and out of the house with the household insurance. It cost me £180 to have my little Siggie repaired. Good luck, check your home insurance

cheers for info guys, i live at my place of work so i don't need insurance, my stuff is covered at home, but not when out & about and not for accidental damage unfortunately.

that why i usually have camera insurance, but i let it lapse just before Christmas (FOOL)

I dropped a Nikon D700 with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 zoom from three feet onto a wooden floor in November :D. Oh boy, what a mess ...

The lens is scrap now. Just goes to show, non-'professional' lenses can't handle the same abuse as the L series can :).

Hope you get yours fixed.

I take it your D700 is alright Andy?

Thats why i buy insurance up to a certain value. I don't take all my gear out so i'm cover with what i bring out and what ever left at home is on the home insurance :)

Thats why i insist i want theft and accident damage include on my insurance because when i'm out and about i know these thing can happen specially accident damage.

If your standing outside the leaning tower of Pisa, having driven there from the Uk and drop your camera, ug, that was pretty annoying. So feel for you, hope can get fixed without too much expense. Since got an individual insurance plan for bits just in case.

(Dare I say the iphone 4 can get some good pics in times of emergency)

Actually, the D700 suffered a little, in that the viewfinder blind mechanism took a knock and I couldn't activate the blind using the little flick switch (next to the eye piece ;)) any more. I had to take it apart (fiddly job) and reassemble the mechanism, but it's as good as new now .

As for insurance, I don't even know that any of my possesions are covered against accidental damage. Things like insurance seem to work quite differently in Germany :|. Never mind, they're only 'things' :D!
