Dropped Camera. Viewfinder blurry, photos fine.

Not sure where was best to post this. I dropped my D3200 and now when I look through the view finder it's blurry, kind of like I'm drunk or swimming. It will autofocus fine and the photo on the playback looks perfectly fine. What have I done? I've tried the dia-wotsit on the viewfinder but it doesn't make a difference.

Help!! I'm considering selling an organ or a child to pay for a new one so I'm hoping there's a fix I can do at home. Willing to try anything.

Seriously…

The first thing I would check is the dioptric tuning
as you can easily fixed it yourself… does your ca-
mera have such adjustment?
 
Depends how much a new camera is. :D

I tried the dioptric dial (Now I know that's what it's called and not a dia-wotsit!) but no change. :(
 
The pentaprism has moved
 
The pentaprism has nothing to do with taking the picture! Only for the viewfinder

Good excuse for an upgrade

It is more than possible the cost of repair will be as much, if not more than a good second hand D3200.
I dont own, and never have, a D3200, but can you not use the rear screen for focus etc?
 
It's about £200-250 for a second hand D3200 or I could do a buy now pay later upgrade to the newest low end Nikon which is a D3400 for about £329.

My teenage daughter has just messaged me and asked if she can go on a school geography trip for £750. It never rains.....

Possibly the mirror has shifted slightly, sounds like something that is putting the image into the viewfinder is out of whack, does it really matter that much if the viewfinder looks a bit squiffy so long as the pictures turn out ok?

Yes, it makes me feel seasick! Haha.

It does sound as though it's the pentaprism as suggested above which I guess means it's a write off.

Ooh, I wonder about house insurance, would that cover it?

Could do, if you have accidental cover and new for old you might get a good result, any lens damage, and what's your excess.

All depends where and when you dropped it. Check the policy wording before you speak to them so that you know what to say. Insurance companies love to wriggle out of paying so get your story in order in advance.
 
Just called and looks like I'm eligible to claim on the insurance. Phew!
 
It was my understanding that all of the consumer level Nikon and Canon dSLR have pentamirror not pentaprism in their viewfinder lightly.


The former is way more prone to impact dislodging than the latter.

Hopefully it can be replaced/repaired economically under the insurance claim :)
