Edit My Images
Yes
Me and my business partner both use Dropbox to sync wedding images.

It's a really long winded process.

What we do is, we add half of the images each to a shared Dropbox folder and let them upload then create one Lightroom catalogue. It takes forever to upload them all. About 4-5 days.

Does anybody know if
A, there is a quicker way to share files together?

And B, if I was to add all the images to my Dropbox, and start them syncing, them my partner adds them all to his Dropbox and starts syncing, would they just upload and not bother downloading? The files are already there. Do you think there would be a sync issue?

It would still take up the same amount of upload time, but they wouldn't need to download???

What's people's thoughts on this?

If I am sending images for download I use We Transfer.
If I am sending images for viewing or sharing as in your situation, I FTP them to a server where my business partner can view from the server or download them if need be.

I'm sure one of you must have a website? Can you FTP them to the server the website is hosted on?

Yes we have a website, although I think there may only be a gig storage on it. I like using Dropbox just cause it's so easy, I just didn't know if it would work how I imagined it to work with regards to images already there on both macs, and them just uploading. Would Dropbox recognise that img_0001 is on both machines and just upload from one of them?

Try BitTorrent sync. It runs very fast. I use it to get video footage from videographers who video weddings for me and you can easily transfer 40GB in a few hours from them to me.

You could also spend 30 minutes copying the images from your partner before you both leave the wedding at the end of the day?

There are probably lots of better ways to do this - even mailing cards to each other would be faster.

What exactly are you trying to do?

Would Dropbox recognise that img_0001 is on both machines and just upload from one of them?

Probably. But I wouldn't bet on it.

We both have the full set of images on both macs, but we want to back then all up to Dropbox as well. So I want to know if we both start uploading the same files at the same time, if it would half the upload time? There would be files uploading to Dropbox from 2 locations but they would be the same files. I didn't know if Dropbox would recognise this and uploads different files from each Mac or if there would be loads of sync issues with all the files on both macs trying to upload to one folder.

I take it that you're each at a different site...?
dropbox has limits on upload and sync speeds I think.
Are these options unlimited?
What broadband speeds do you have? are you on restricted bandwidth if a on a domestic line and the upload is being 'throttled' because you're beyond reasonable use?

Yes we are. We have one big Dropbox folder that we share on both machines. It's where we store our raws and a shared catalogue for LR.

Did they fix the problem with storing LR catalogues in DB? At one point, Dropbox and Adobe were advising against that.

Just looked at that - it looks very cool.

I think smart previews maybe the way forward for us. At least we can both work on the pics whilst all pictures are uploading to db. Once all images are synced, the person who is using smart previews should be able to open the catalogue and relocate the images and start using the actual files.

Maybe so. Do they not limit you if its for business purposes??

Hi Lee, it think it may be as well ensuring you have an efficient workflow for you both, then searching for a tech solution to suit. Do you both work on all the pictures? If not, how you divide the work between you?

If you both have the full set of images why don't you just use dropbox for the catalogue rather than the raw files. You already have redundant off site storage the way you're working and as long as you both keep the same storage structure that way you're only sharing a single file back and forth?

I use dropbox quite a lot for sharing video files and it is quite slow.
Its not the ideal prodict for your use, it takes me about 2hr for a 1gb file to upload.
Then the same to download at the other location.

I think this might be the best option. And then just export the final pics as a catalogue and upload that as backup to Dropbox.

Thanks for every bodies input on this [emoji12]
