I have a wedding client who has had to fly back to his new wifes homeland and they might not be back for a couple of months by the sound of it. There wedding photos are ready and I am keen to get the web quality files all over to them by drop box.

How easy is this to do? Could I just upload one folder with all the photos in it? :help:

I'm such a noob at dropbox :bang:

You can download the Dropbox app for mac (sure there'll be a PC version) that designates a folder where you can drop stuff (including whole folders) and they'll automatically upload to DB... then you can share a link with the person and they can access the pics

Just don't invite them to the folder (I get this at work all of the time, and it drives me mad). Just share the link to view it.

We've binned Dropbox at work in favour of wetransfer.com - way, way easier to operate! :)

Yep, my preference too. Unless I actually want to collaborate with somebody, then it's Dropbox.

I set up an FTP server at home on an old laptop that runs 24/7, I think in these days of Dropbox and Google drive, etc, etc, people have forgotten how clean and simple good old fashioned FTP really is.

What a waste of money, you've got the hardware sat round not doing a lot, not to forget the waste of electricity, this looks to be a one off or very rare situation for the OP so why would they not use an off the shelf option that is very easy to use

One word:

Bandwidth.

At 50w (a rough guess, it's actually less), it costs about £3.60 a month to run a laptop 24/7. It's running several websites (HTTP server), an FTP server, Ventrilo server (voice coms for gaming), bittorrent client, Skype and 2x security webcams.

All of which I have 100% full control of, my files are not located on unknown servers and when im home I use it for other stuff when my main PC is running applications in full screen.

It's not a "waste of electricity" because what it does would cost A LOT more if done in any other fashion.

I have an old Sony hi-fi, which for some strange reason uses 40w in standby, most people would never think this and simply leave it plugged in.

Got security lights on your house? They use about 10w when the lights are off...... Just sitting there doing nothing.

Where as many people think "OMG it has an LED it must be costing a fortune!!", I actually understand exactly what my electricity costs are.
As someone who grew up with a father that used to follow everyone around the house turning off lights, leaving you standing in the dark at the top of the stairs and then went berserk when my new PC tower had lots of LEDs on the front, I made it my business to understand the truth about this stuff.

If I only wanted an FTP server, then i'd buy a cheap Android tablet to run it from and simply leave that at home instead.... Hell i'm pretty sure my old smartphone would be sufficient, with the addition of a good SD card and that wouldn't use much power at all, maybe 2w on the charger.

+1 for dropbox. a great app imho. a simple install, does versioning, files restore.

ps, for those that maybe confused, Dropbox is a syncing app, not primarily for backup! Though i do have my gf's laptop backing up her photo folder to dropbox in case of a hd problem. 2gb is plenty for her atm.

also not sure how an ftp server can offer the simplicity and features of dropbox for the majority of users. so many apps on my phone can now save to dropbox instead of the internal memory makes it a very useful service that would in many instances be difficult or impossible to replicate with ftp.

Yeah I'd rather not do a file on my website incase they share it with many people and my bandwidth sky rockets. Dropbox sounds perfect!

DVD and an envelope?

Dropbox is great for sharing files. I just sent 374 to a friend of a black tie event I did. I had lightroom output the files into my dropbox folder and they uploaded automatically. Once one photo had been uploaded I had the link, sent it across and told them to check back in a couple of hours once they had all uploaded. :)

It's a few 100mb's of jpg tops, not a hd movie :D

Everyone should have enough bandwidth for that on a business site. Say it'll be up for 48hrs then take it down if you're worried.

Haha true but with them being so hard to get hold of I didn't want them brandishing it around all of their guests and the countless Japanese friends / family who could not make it.

I've sent them the drop box link now. Let's see whether they get it fine.
