OK, which one of you was it then? :D

Do you think there will be a clamp down on drones in the wake of Gatwick, which is obviously the start of a new 'terrorist' campaign to disrupt the west. You mark my words, other serious drone incidents will occur in many places now, not just this country either. I don't mean idiots doing stupid stunts, I mean concerted disruption. If so, is it worth investing now? I looked at the Mavic Pro, but then realised i would need to upgrade my mobile to something that could work with it (you need some kind of 'App' apparently) and my computer to cope with the new file types.... it isn't just a matter of getting a drone, it is a whole investment programme amounting to a significant spend.
 
I think that this incident is a "concerted disruption" and yes it will have an impact on drone use (well hopefully it will!).
With drones being used to fly drugs into prisons, several 'silly' previous airport incidents in the past and now this deliberate attack on Gatwick (or more particularly the thousands of people attempting to fly out) something must be done.
 
Have to say I quite fancied a drone but the rules about keeping it in sight and only 400ft high well this put me off although I can understand the reasons for this ,I would not buy one now as it would be too easy to accidently break the law and get into trouble

Or even, so far, being caught

A well organised and funded (for a lot of drones!) group with a point to make could cause havoc around the world so easily, and breakfast tv has even had experts on telling everyone there's fk all we can do about it

You would be surprised at what you can do with the limitations in place. You don't really have to go that high to get great aerial photos. I've photographed many times out of a plane window when travelling and the best photos are always over the mountains otherwise you're too high for city stuff.

The DJI app clearly shows what height your drone is flying at and will stop you from flying it higher unless you hack it.

Keeping it in sight isn't so difficult and especially so if you're working in a landscape environment.

I like the cool idea of using hawks to take them down. Some sort of directional EMP would be nice and effective though maybe?
 
Will soon be like air guns. Kept to pathetic power and range with so many laws and harsh punishments that nobody wants to bother with them.

I should stop reading drone threads as ignorant comments like this just annoy me. Why would you hope it has an impact on drone use? because you don't have one or not interested in them??

How about the people who have spent thousands of pounds on their drone and use them properly, should they be punished because of the actions of a stupid individual?

How many people have been killed by cars, vans used by terrorists to run people down.... is the solution to ban cars and vans.

Yes I agree with registration etc or an awareness course so people understand the restrictions and don't accidentally do something wrong, but do you honestly think that someone who is intent on doing something illegal will use a drone registered to them.

Burn the witches...

If it means a huge risk to our security as human beings and the security of the world as a whole, then yes there should be laws in place that are strict, and if it means the ‘innocent’ suffer a little then so be it to stop the idiots who have caused this, and no doubt other crimes.
Surely the people who paid for flights and the airlines have suffered huge losses because of this as well so drone users can join the queue.
You obviously are a drone user or are interested in being so but surely you can see the logic behind tightening the laws on this.
 
Problem with deliberate drone misuse and let me say that again... ‘deliberate’ is that introduction of any new laws/restrictions will have zero effect.

It’s a bit like introducing a law to prevent murder when someone kills someone.

What’s needed is some anti drone tech

I love some of the comments I have read on facebook i.e

send in the s.a.s

get the R.A.F to shoot it down

use a kalishnakov

send in the army

shoot it down with a shotgun ( 100 yd range if your lucky)

train golden eagles to bring it down

send out a pulse of energy to disable it

all because little daisy Beckham Shania smith can't go to lapland to see the reindeer .

or fred blogs is gonna miss a couple of days of sun in Tenerife

and as someone else said this will now lead to copycat attacks by every d******d in the world .

I can see the logic and like I said I'm all for registration, education etc. but there is generally ignorance or fear by non-drone users and media.

That is exactly the point I am making, if someone purposely wants to break the law as they did in this case there is absolutely no legislation that will stop it. Tech to counter it is what's needed in the correct places.

Guy I knew who had one said it was programmed into the software using its GPS to prevent it being flown near airports, is this not the case for all of them?
 
Probably just me because I don't fly at all but I can see a funny side to it although I know that is completely inappropriate
 
I will continue to fly my very expensive drone within the law and away from trouble, even if I have to register it or fit some kind of transponder. Idiots will find a way round any kind of measure.

As for geofencing to stop drones flying its a farce. You can buy all the parts to build your own drone including some fairly massive ones.

Lets not forget the Government banned hand guns but it failed to stop the crime getting hold and using them. I've lost hobbies in the past including Metal detecting, shooting and a few more because of idiots, it will always happen in some form or other.

I assume you'd be quite happy if you had paid thousands of pounds to take your excited child on holiday and it was cancelled due to some idiot(s) with a drone? I know plenty of families who have saved for a long time to go on the Lapland trip, and to make out that it's just a trivial inconvenience for them is pretty selfish IMO.

I guess that would help towards preventing someone claiming it was an accident going into air space?

I don't think it's fair to ban drones, just like cars they aren't designed to hurt or kill people and a lot of things can be misused (kitchen knife, golf club etc). Guns on the other hand are designed to shoot things, although I'm not anti gun either.

Do you agree with the criminilisation of airgun owners then? Or those who used to shoot pistols until Dunblane left them as arch enemies of the state? Exactly the same thing happened to them - perfectly legal owners lost everything (many 000s £s in some cases) but it is what the public wanted. Ask the question in the high street tomorrow: In the wake of Gatwick do you think drones should be made illegal? How many eople would say 'NO' ? If the question was phrased differently you might get a different response, but it won't be, it will be simplified and the knee-jerk legislation will result, affecting all legal and responsible owners and flyers. Just like with airgun shooters and pistol shooters. Criminals do not tend to obey laws or restrictions!
