if i had to chose one of those i think i would go for 100-400 canon 4.5 IS USM but it would also depend on what you had already.

im looking for a new lens at present and cant decide between the

canon 100-400 as above
sigma 50-500 and 150-500

but good luck with your quest :)

think i got down to one these
canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM

Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM

For birds and planes you'll deffinatly want the reach of the 100-400.

A cracking lens!

miss leading title, I thought I was going to see a cracking spoof pic of some nuts being driven by something:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

sorry to disapoint ya

I have the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and it is fantastic.
even at the top end ?

Only had it a few days. The IS is brilliant and seems to be sharp all the way through the 70 - 300. I will try and post a couple of pics tomorrow morning at both ends.

cheers that would be great,
got few quote from kerso, now trying to decided which

ISO 100

no pp just converted from RAW and re sized. The original is pin sharp.

Bit underexposed though-maybe iso 400 would have been better on an overcast day.

get the fastest lens you can with the longest focal length you can afford

simple

Its all down to price/performance....

the 70-300 IS is pretty good for ~300 quid, not as good as the 70-200 f2.8 but cheaper and longer. The 100-400 is longer than the 70-200 f2.8 but not as good.

If you plan on shooting in 70-200mm range and have a pile of cash, get the 70-200.

If you want 100-400mm range get the 100-400.

If you want a reasonable telephoto with some length but don't fancy blowing ~700 quid, get the 70-300.

Thats a pretty fair comment on those three, doesn't help much does it?

If money is not object, the 70-200 f2.8 with some TC's is the most flexible approach, but you are heading towards 1k for that setup, even more if you add IS that the other two lenses have...

decided on the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM

and what i got tonight :woot::woot:

None of them are duff to be honest, I am sure you will be happy with your choice.

Get down your nearest race circuit and get snapping :D

finding 100-400 quiet good, altho wish i could get closer on some shots,

Don't say that to me Chris.... I've got the 70-300 IS USM and I was thinking of investion in the 100-400 for specific occasions. Now you've got me thinking about one of the 500mm Sigmas.

BTW, the 70-300 is "OK" for most uses but wide open at the top end it is a bit soft. Nothing that you can't deal with in PP, but it's nowhere near as good as the 100-400, IMPO.

All zooms are at their worse at the long end... probably the 100-400 is not quite spot on at 400mm too.

If you want to go longer than 400mm you are into expensive territory if you want reasonable image quality. There is no cheap way out of this one!

Sometimes I borrow a 1.4x TC to go with my 300 F4, but that means you have to cope without the zoom! Personally, not a problem, others disagree.
