I own the Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner. Its always worked fine with my
older Win XP Desktop and it works ok with my Samsung laptop Win 7 Home premium
I now have a Dell XPS desktop Windows 8.1. I can't seem to find the drivers for the 8.1
system. Anyone have any ideas why or is there any other way to overcome this

The nearest spec currant model to mine is over £400., for the amount of scanning I do now
I couldn't justify that amount. I I will try Win 7 driver. What about the compatibility issue with
8.1 system.

I don't know anything about Windows nowadays, but Vuescan scanning software can often breathe new life into old scanners: http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/epson_perfection_4990.html.

I have used Vuescan with numerous scanners, including the Epson 4490 that I currently own, without any problems. Perhaps download the trial and see what happens?

I have a Perfection 3200 Photo which is obviously years old, but does what I need it to do as far as scanning goes. I turned over to Vuescan when , I think, we arrived at Vista and there were no more Epson drivers. Totally pleased with the product and the level of updating (all for free after the initial purchase). I purchased an .icc film target from Wolf Faust and calibrated the scanner and have obtained very satisfactory results.

Honestly, it's a no-brainer.

Anthony.

Is it a 32bit\64bit issue where Epson may only have 32 bit drivers for older scanners.

I had this issue with a couple of older scanners so I put an additional hard disk in my pc and installed XP to that HDD. I used the bios boot selection to choose which OS I wanted to used Bit of a faff but in meant the scanner manufacturers did not get any more of my hard earned.

I've downloaded the Epson drivers, the software is exactly the same as on my
old XP desktop. Thanks all for your replies and help.

i think you have to manually select and install the driver by going to device manager / imaging devices / epson ??? and update drivers and use have disk rather than auto update and brows the folder where you unpacked the driver ( usually c:\epson )
i read somewhere this is whats needed to be done to install the drivers on windows 8 / 10
