Plugged my new canon 300D into my laptop and it won't install the necessary drivers to download pictures.

Can someone recommend a link or something please. I've tried the canon site to no avail!

Cheers Ben

Have you got the discs that come with the camera, think its either EOS info or DPP you need?

Think Canon only provide updates these days although there is a way to make it think you have the original.

Card reader would be far easier, quicker and save battery power too, in fact got a CF to PC card adapter that should fit a laptop you can have au gratis, same as this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-CompactFlash-PC-Card-Adapter/dp/B00004Z5SI

Didn't come with the discs, and it's on my shopping list but not yet.

Ben you can't unfortunately but if you do a search on Tp there is a way of editing your registry to get them as an upgrade.

It does require adding some data to your registry.

I've probably got the discs that came with my old 300D somewhere, i'll have a look you can have them if i find them

but seriously a CF card reader costs less than a tenner - so going that route makes considerably more sense (especially as download from the reader will be quicker)

Was this of no interest then?

So sorry I didn't even notice that bit haha. Wasn't being rude! That would be fantastic! Thank you very much!

if i can find my disc you can have it \ them, but tbh as already said a card reader is the way forward.

You do not need drivers with windows 7. You just need to change the USB camera mode to "print/PTP" in the settings and it will be recognised as an external hard drive.

Went out and bought a reader this morning. £6.52 from Jessops as I found one of my old school friends works there :-)

Did you try the option I suggested? Would not recommend removing the card too often as 300D's often have issues with broken or bend pins if you do that regularly.

No bUt I'll try in a bit I have an iPad and my laptop as it my mrs 40 miles away! But will be going up there later. Do you have a more in depth description of where I should be going owindows 7 please?

The option you have to change is in the camera menu. You do not have to do anything in windows.

Ah I see will have a go later and let you know if I figured it out haha. Thanks again :-)

Although on the other hand downloading from the camera can shorten the life of its circuitry - personally i've never downloaded from the camera and always swap cards ( I usually go through three or four in a day anyway) Ive had a 300D for ten years ans a 20D for 8 and ive never bent or broken a pin - you'd have to be seriously cackhanded to do that.

golden rule if the card doesnt go in easily (on either camera or reader) then chances are its not the right way round so dont force it

If Ben doesn't need it now as he's bought a reader, could I trouble you for it ???

Ben

Be aware you can't do remote shooting (not very easily anyway) with the 300D and anything above windows XP.

Personally as above, I've always used a card reader to download the shots.

Hope your enjoying it

I dont think he's trying to do tethered shooting - my read was that he was just connecting the camera to the pc to download shots (ie using the camera as a card reader)

Yes I think the same, but was just also advising of the issues if he did want to try tethered shooting.

with regard to trying to put the card in wrong i have a small bright yellow sticker on one side of my cards and the same yellow dot on the side that the card needs matching to on my card reader and both my camera bodys.
simple but works for me.
