Yes
Just tried to save some pictures to disc and it came up on the screen

driver not detected

so i put another disc of photos in and when clicking on ''my computor'' there was no icon for me to click on it had dissapeared.

so I turned of the laptop and switched on again.

The driver has returned and I have copied my pics.

BUT

when trying to look at them half of them are not there, well the file is but not the pic.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm

a whirring noise is coming from the drive as if its hard work in there,

will it settle or is it a trip to the pc doc?

Do you mean driver or drive?

Also, back up your photos now. Do this before you do anything else.

driver [sorry]

all photos backed up on a daily basis never leave much on the laptop so no worries there.

what version of windows do you have might be worth going to a previous dates backup and going from there and def 100 % back all photoss and important files

windows vista

no idea how to do what you say.

everything backed up

ok i did what was suggested and its still the same.

It is the horrble whirring noise that scares me.

Also the pics come up as if they are there on the disc.
[well some of them]

but when i double click on them nothing happens.

I think it needs to go to the shop.

Try the following, click on Start >> Setting >> Control Panel >> System (icon) >> Select device manager

(top right on Vista home premium, maybe different for other vista's)

In the device manager list look near the top, does it say DVD/CD Rom Drives, does it list yours (click on the plus sign) ?? is there a yellow exclamation mark??

If yours is not listed or there a yellow exclamation mark then this means that Windows is not seeing it or it is faulty.

In most laptop the DVD\CD drive is removable, (Turn off Laptop first) so try removing yours DVD\CD drive and then reinserting it, make sure it is fully pushed back into place, if you are not sure how check out the Laptop manufacturers web site for details.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Sorry for taking a while to update.

After the prob I went to bed got up the next day and started again.

I think the problem was the discs I was using I tried 3 memorex discs and the same thing happened.

I had a brainwave and chucked in a tesco disc and all was well and crossed fingers will be for the foreseeable future.

Whilst not common, it's not unknown for a disk to be bad. maybe something in the production causes a problem. I've had several disks give problems, over the years, and it's usually from one group within a batch.

Do you run Verify when you burn disks. If not it might be a good idea as the data gets read and compared to the original files. I have also found that some disks wont run on one compute yet run OK on another. Not had this problem for some time, but I've a old Freecom USB DVD/CD reader that I keep in case this happens. It's never failed me

sounds more like a dodgy disk or cd drive, a reformat won't resolve that,
