I have identified the motherboard that I want to get (Asus Maximus VII Ranger) and will pair it with one of the newer i5 haswells / devil canyons in the new year along with 16GB RAM. But now turning attention to what the drive set up should be. I will have two spare SSDs, one ADATA 120GB and a Crucial M4 256GB, plus one 500GB HDD from the old machine.

How should I set up the drive system to handle Lightroom and PSE?

Should I set up one for the SSDs to be a scratch disk? Given how cheap SSDs have now become, if another small one is needed this is an option to get another.

Part of the reason for choosing this motherboard is that it is M.2 ready. If the price comes down on these would it be better to have the operating system on this or would I see more benefit from having Lightroom and all the photos on this drive.

Any guidance is most welcome.

Thanks
Mark

given you have 16gb it shouldnt be scratching much unless youre doing REALLY big edits.

if you can keep the LR cat and your working set of images on an SSD. then move the images onto your large mechanical disk when done. speeds LR up no end.

Thanks Neil. Just tends to be the large panos where I hit memory problems.
