Dreaded Purple Fringing

Yes
As it says, I was out saturday at the local rugby match and got some good shots (for me anyway) but the only thing was that some were spoiled by purple fringing which was quite bad around the players numbers in particular. (White number on red/blue shirts)
I was using my Nikon 80-200 f2.8 ED and the D200 and a uv filter on the glass. Conditions were good and the settings were 1/500th at usually f4ish in shutter priority and iso 800.
Now, is it just me or how can I guard against this as it only seems to be with this piece of glass and none of my other lenses?
As I'm in work I can't post any shots......... Sorry.

David.

Were you using a TC? I've found my sigma 300mm has fringing quite badly if I use it wide open with the 1.4tc on it.

Pete

As a matter of fact I was but I have used it without and got the same result unfortunately. :(

Has it happened with this lens before, David? Could it have received a knock that has misalligned the optics slightly......?

A knock is possible I suppose one never knows. I thought it was maybe just me. It hasn't happened with any other lens, my 18-200vr for example.
The f2.8 is supposed to be up there with the best of them though.....

hmmm - dont know much about the nikon breed i'm afraid, but seems a little suspect......

Whatever manufacturer i would expect CA to be well controlled at F/4, even with high contrast shots (and we're not talking buildings against bright sky here).

A knock may have some band separation so might be worth some Nikon help....?

Some lenses are far more prone to Purple than others, not sure if this is one of them though...

I have a Tamron 70-300 which loves purple, normally use "replace colour" in Photoshop select the purple with the eyedropper & then desaturate - does a pretty decent job

I have one of these lenses and it is fringe-free. I get more fringinging on my Nikon 180mm ED f2.8 which is supposed to be optically better than the 80-200mm. I'd suggest there may be something wrong with it. As has been said a TC won't help but you say it exhibits the same without the TC?

Yep, unfortunately it does it with the TC on or off.....

Thought this one was one of the best, that's why I went for it, so I wouldn't have to pp so much.

I would have expected the same too....

Thanks for the comments guys, all helpful. This lens may end up on Ebay in the end.

David.
