Ok, I'm sure and know many agree that it's high time we merge the PP threads into one supreme PP extravaganza:D

So, I open the forum to some rule :rules:discussion:thinking:

Two things I've noted is that one thread can be too serious and one has the potential to go off the rails- no prizes for guessing right:lol:

There's room for both in the one thread surely?

My thoughts on rules;
1. Post image in jpeg. Can supply a raw/ tiff if you want but as I've discovered these seem to be a pain to load up and we want to keep it simple.

2. Any edit is allowed- you change what you want- paste in new skies, sharks or flying badgers. I'm not going to put sharks in all my pictures but it's nice to know there'll be no tantrums if I do.

3. Workflow- by all means post it but not a prerequisite of entry. Hopefully it will become self perpetuating with more people doing it until it becomes common place. At the end of the day you can always ask how an effect was done.

4. Usual porn/ language forum rules

Any other thoughts on rules/ achieving a union of PP minds?

I think all techniques are valid so while pasting a shark into a photo may not seem relevant to some, the skill is transferable- I had a Christmas photo were I ended up taking someone's head from one picture and pasting in another so that everyone was looking at the camera in the same photo.
After having used the technique here previously the solution just presented itself when I was looking at the pics and it worked well.

So I could be mental but it'd be nice to get your help to make this happen:help:

As long as everyone agrees it's a good thing to do:shrug:

Personally i think its better being seperated as it is...

I dont post in the other one, and may be i should more often, but i dont think the banter is appropriate for a serious thread with real PP q&a.

they are two different animals, wouldnt be good bed fellows,
there is room for both, just needs a bit more participation in the pp thread,
there are some great edits in HWYETP which would fit in pp thread nicely,
i enjoy both great fun

There is the banter aspect although it's always good natured and never too gutter like- although I'm pretty relaxed about most things so not the best judge:lol:

I treat the two separately but was looking at a merge from a different perspective so good to get all the viewpoints- that's what this thread is all about.

i cant be bothered explaining what I do in my efforts (or remember) so am quite happy sticking to the original :D

The only thing missing from the HWYETG is the workflow aspect....

I've only occasionally peered into the PPG, yet the quality of some of the joke edits I've seen is as high or higher on the HWYETG and things can be learned from it in equal measure.

I can entirely understand the argument about keeping them separate, it just can get a bit quiet on both thats all...

We are the original thread  We are different :) we like a laugh, we go way over the top with our edits, we can be technical, we can be artistic, but mostly we dont take ourselves to seriously

If people want to dip there toes in and have a go, good on them..but the way this thread runs is why it has lasted so long over 96,860 hits...
So, we must be doing something right, this thread will run the way it is as long as people keep posting which I and a lot of others will continue to do so.

They make take our lives but they'll never take our freedom :D:D

Some people may not like the way we do things on our thread if thats the case then they can dip into the other thread ;)

Just 'cos you won both at the same time doesn't mean you get to unify the titles you know ;)

if we unify the threads then he only wins once :D

Agreed - some of the skill on show in the HWY... thread is extremely impressive.

It was the numbers I was thinking about- if there was only one thread and some clear rules that embodied the spirit of both threads I thought it would help boost participation.

Good to look at it from different angles- I had even missed out Mr G coming second as I thought that would be frowned upon:lol:

Perhaps the answer is to list workflow in the HWY... thread. Obviously keep it optional like it is already because as we know there are no rules but if it is posted more frequently it may become the majority and the relaxed atmosphere that we have means there is no pressure for those that don't.
I know I probably couldn't always post mine as I'm still a bit random with what I'm doing:D

Thing of it is, they're for different types of edit. PP, basically, is to enhance without taking things too far away from what the snapper saw through the viewfinder. T'other one is for warped minds creative skills to be let loose.

Knowledge of both - and how to differentiate between them, and knowing when each may be appropriate - is valuable, and worth practicing.

I'm quite answering any requests for methods I use ... or I could just put them both in my signature :D

At the risk of being contentious , I can’t be ar$ed with the rules. I like the original thread because it is generally populated with people who don’t take themselves too seriously, and don’t kick off by imposing their self important rules on others. Don’t get me wrong, I like (and I'd like to think I'm capable of) a serious edit or improvement, but they take time. The original thread is a laugh and an outlet to experiment with your software making quick rough and ready edits without someone ripping it out of you. In the end, if you want to make decent composites, playing in this thread will make your editing better if you want it to. Unification? Borrocks!

exactly!

If i use the other thread, i tend to use the same tools to create the same effects for sharpening/smoothing/blending etc...

when i post in the HWY thread im challenged not just by the subject image and creative ideas, but how i can make them work using whatever tools i can for which ever layer i am working on....

I think they are better left seperate, the "serious" thread, isn't meant to be serious, it's just trying to keep it within limits and show what can be done without adding objects and just using the original image.
The other thread, perhaps best called the less serious thread has some first class editing going on, but it's not really explaining what or how it's done for beginners, and some may be put off by the level of editing in some images, thinking theirs could never be as good and not wanting to be shown up.

newcomers shouldn't be afraid to have a go though wayne ... there's been the odd woefull winner :D

flamin nora... i go out for 1 day and look what happens. Merge the two threads you say? That's tantamount to sleeping with my wife... hang on that's not serious enough... tantamount to stealing my golf clubs  That's better.

Egos/ pride etc are all left at the door. Aptly demonstrated by this fine example for which I have no shame:D

Thanks all for the contributions:). Good to get the thoughts on both in one place and hopefully all the recent activity on the topic will only serve to increase the popularity among the wider membership.

It's not a case of egos, it's a case of beginners not knowing how to do it, and afraid of being laughed at or made fun of if they try.
Lets face it while the banters fun for most of us, some people are shy or quieter than others, and some on TP are less kind than others with the comments.
It's fine for those of us who don't take it seriously, but we don't need to be loosing or offending people do we.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with your first sentance there Wayne; Forums are an ideal way to pick up new skills and yes, some people are more introvert than others. Unfortunately, I think egos can play a part; I'm sure we've all seen posts commenting on some aspect of an edit or photo that we disagree with, but these comments are often worded in such a way to suggest authority and knowledge when none or little exists. I know I've received some of these comments, and yes, it used to bother me. I'd be gutted if I thought I'd genuinely offended someone, but some people (egos) clearly don't give a toss. (an example from today ) It is (imho) this that loses the more shy people, and it is why I like the original thread. Phew,

That said, in the unlikely event of anyone asking how I'd done something I'd be pleased to tell them. Having seen loads of your posts Wayne I know you are very generous with your extensive knowledge; its a pity that more people don't follow your example.

Was that a rant? Sorry..

Oh and Leigh, your wife said I could have your golf clubs but I'm left handed so they don't work ;)

Haha, and the smaller the number the longer you go, but with more risk of spraying it everywhere :-)

I might have guessed it would be you lot that dragged this thread into the gutter:lol:;)

Anyway, good to have the debate and it was certainly interesting to see how both threads treated the same image- especially when entries were in both. Hopefully I haven't upset too many:D

Here's to the longetivity of both threads and I hope both are given the respect they deserve and the people that keep them going.
