DPOTY 2023 - Chat Thread

Congratulations again from me too.

Just over 24 hours left for any entries people, some nice images already but we can always do with more!

I've got some potential images flagged in Lightroom, but I am off to somewhere tomorrow that has a potentially photogenic structure...

Left it until the last minute again, but I think it was worth it. I had 2 options from this evening at Saltburn Pier, I ended up torn between two images that I wanted to use for the Structures theme, this was the one that ended up being rejected.

I should really look at the upcoming subjects - fortunately one of my backup options for "structure" fitted the bill.

Last day of voting today for Structure. Several hot contenders for top spot.

Congratulations @Norkie with a deserved win for August, although @Craikeybaby and @mex were breathing down your neck there. A good set of images again in August, some real corkers. Keep it up folks.
League table coming shortly.

I am really chuffed to see that I was one of the higher scorers for August, first time I've earned any points (at least you consistently score Martin @ShinySideUp !). It goes to prove that persistence is key, and that eventually you can get an image that resonates with some people. Whereas @mex enters for the first time and nearly wins the month!

It's not a problem. All I need is for about 50 people to vote and have all of them vote for me and the job is done -- I have a feeling it's not going to be this month, or next month or...

Hope it's going to run next year though.

Thanks! That was a big jump up the table. I thought I was going for the dubious honour of “lowest score whilst entering each month”.

Hi all
It looks like I'm going to miss this months theme.
I'm currently in Shrewsbury hospital, where I've been for the last 6 days. With a severe case of acute pancreatitis, which came on out of the blue on Thursday. I could be here for another 5 days or 2-3 weeks.
It's really not a nice thing to have, completely debilitating and painful. It can be brought in by gallstones, so I need to have a ultrasound and if they find any, them an MRI. They would most likely remove the gallbladder.
Anyway, happy shooting.

Seems such a cliché, but get well soon.

Sorry to hear that Dominic, I hope it's sorted out pdq. It's good that you are still able to be online though during your tribulations.
On the up side, it gives everyone else a chance to nibble at your lead in the league table!

Hope you recover quickly. Curiously I had an ambulance trip to hospital Friday 1st September with what appears to be a gallstone, but in my case recovery took just a few days.

Get well soon Dominic ;)

Hey Dominic, hope you are up and about soon. ;)

I've got nothing for this month. I have pictures of old rocks and monuments but really, nothing that's worth the effort of posting.

I've added my entry into Septembers compo! Again, I thought I'd add an explainer!

This is the actual tomb of
Melancthon William Henry Lombe Brooke:
The 1881 Census for Attleborough tells us that Lombe Brooke was a solicitor, aged 40, who had been born in Cambridge in 1839.
At the time he was living at ‘Point Cottage’ in the town. This was where, during his working life and retirement, he completed work on his book: ‘The Great Pyramid of Gizeh…...’ in 1908. It was also where he died in 1929.

His research for his book began in 1878 and continued for the next thirty years ‘when leisure afforded the opportunity’. It was based on correspondence with academics and on manuscripts and books in the British Museum and numerous libraries.
In it, Lombe Brooke scrutinised recorded measurements of the Great Pyramid, adding his theories about their relevance to ‘standard’ British weights and measures, of which he was critical. He argued in great detail, from measurements of the Pyramid, that:
"the measures of the old Saxons and also those of the Greeks and Romans may be derived from the standards of measure preserved in the Great Pyramid".
Lombe Brooke, even in 1908, also argued against the introduction of metrication!

His work on the book was also reflected in his Will, when he specified that a white limestone pyramid was to be erected over his own grave - and it must be: ‘91 inches around the base and 58 inches to the apex’. Today, that pyramid still survives in Attleborough Cemetery, its limestone now discoloured and encrusted - but, the measurements are exactly as Lombe Brooke directed.

I thought I'd add some artistic licence about it's age!!

A runaway winner for September @LeeRatters , well deserved but with some early hot competition. That has shaken up the top of the league table such that it's still all to play for:
