i am going back to a smaller non dslr model
one which can do raw and with a decent sensor size
i like eye level viewing via any eyepiece design
parallax will not be a problem
and a medium 3-4X zoom with a wide angle short end

i could google a bit but i feel someone in the forum knows a good answer

cheers

present camera lumix G1 with kit lens
that is no mirror and electronic viewfinder

For a small camera, and if I had the money it would be the one I would get, I like the Sony RX100 III. It is only 2.9x zoom, but the sensor is quite large for a small camera, and the EVF is excellent. If you look on the Sony RX100 thread, you will see some very nice quality images from all 4 versions of the Sony RX100.

Fuji X30, whichever Sony RX100 you fancy or Panasonic LX100. Same answers as in the last few 'which compact' threads, really.

Hold them all then pick one ^^

They'll all do a good job tbh. I went for an X30 and certainly don't regret it (ended up with an X-T10 also!).

Now that fuji have decided to end the line with the X30. I am just going to stick with it,... but I also have the X20 and X10

thanks chaps...that is quite a choice...of them all the lumix has the larger sensor...4/3 doesnt put me off...its what i have now
will look more closely though and keep an open mind and check the deals like this one on amazon
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DSCRX...&qid=1464521825&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+rx+100+2

i will need to offload the G1 but i dont think i will get a lot for it...missus detests multi cameras in the house

I don't think I'll ever sell mine, what's the point if you only get 2p for it?

I still use mine especially with an old film era 50mm f2.8 macro so my advice is to keep the camera and a cheap or even very cheap lens and use it now and again :D

I think it's possibly the best handling camera I've ever had. If Panasonic made one today exactly the same but with a modern sensor and a top of the line EVF I'd buy it and not only that I'd pay early adopter money for it :D

Not sure whether you know, or whether it is important, but the Sony RX100 only has the inbuilt EVF from version 3 onwards.

I've always wanted every version of the RX100 as they have come out to replace my Canon S95 which it closely resembles, but if I was replacing a DSLR, I would want a viewfinder. That's just me though. :)

thanks for pointing that out...an evf is a must for me for framing and closeups and giving me the 'feel' of a dslr
dont want parallax creeping in and i am loath to crop if not necessary
glad you chaps are knowledgeable about this breed of camera

thats good advice...i have a lumix FZ7 in the boot of the car always as i dont take the G1 out...but i could let the G1 ride shotgun for times when i feel at a loss and wanting a decent image...the FZ7 imho has been technically superceded...apologies to any owners
as you say 2p in the hand is worth 2p in the bush...:D

Another vote for the Fuji X30. I have the X10 and like it but the X30 has loads of improvements.

The LX100 looks good too but the power zooming puts me off. The manual zoom of the Fuji wins it for me.

If you already have M4/3 kit then why not look at Olympus E-Mx series? Not really any larger these inflated compacts and you can use the lenses you already own - we've just 'upgraded' my wife's camera from a Panasonic TZ10 compact to an E-M10 with pancake zoom because it's not much bigger and she doesn't mind using a small camera.

I was talking that two experienced photographers a while back both of whom had owned DSLRs. One had jumped to Fuji CSC - might have been x100 something or other - and the other had gone to Sony a small one plus and Alpha A7 - not sure which one. They were both very happy with their new stuff and didn't miss the old systems at all. Neither of them do sport or fast moving subjects however.

The Panasonic GM5 is the smallest beastie that I was able to find with a decent sensor size. Mine's sitting in my jacket pocket with the 12~32 on it, as I type, so it's certainly compact enough.

Despite being bright red (or perhaps because it is) people don't notice it in use...

Do check the handling before yo buy. Ultra small can look good in theory but small, crammed together, buttons can make the camera a pain to handle. This was the main reason I moved form Olympus mFT system.

Hi Jonathan is it the earthquake thats caused the delay because was supposed to be June?

That may be part of it but the main reason is that Nikon discovered a major problem with the main PCB/processor and have possibly gone back to the drawing board. November is supposedly the earliest we'll see the DL range although the pessimists on DPR are wondering if it'll be scrapped as part of Nikon's cost-cutting measures.

OMG all that effort and it might be scrapped, how bad is that, well if thats the case someone at nikon needs a good slap

That it might be scrapped is purely speculation and has zero basis in known facts. Nikon has needed a good slap for many years - look at the length of time it's taken to release the replacement for the D300 and the ongoing lack of DX WA primes.

:agree:

Anyone interested in Nikon woes should take a look at the articles on Thom Hogan's site. It makes for worrying reading and although I doubt very much that Nikon will crumble and fold they do have significant problems to face.

I might get an fz1000. Lot of people seem to like it

yes there seems to be good deals just now on that one

thanks to all again...its going to be christmas before i can make my mind up...:p:D..perhaps santa indoors will compensate me as i just got her a GTech floor machine...
