Downsizing - Nikon D5000 to what compact?

Hi All, i'm going around in circles. I absolutely love my Nikon D5000 with an 18-55 and a 55-200 vr lens, however, its just not practical at the moment and i'm finding i'm taking less photos as its too much hassle to get the kit out carry it about. i should note, that I have four young children, so we are hauling around quite an amount to kit anyway! I feel by the time i'm ready the moment has passed and i've lost the shot.
In future I will revisit the DSLR world, but for the moment I have narrowed down two cameras, firstly the Canon S100 and secondly, the Fujifilm X10. A must for me is the ability to shoot in camera raw as I will be editing in Lightroom.
Can anybody advise further on which of these might be best and why...I know of the glitches in the X10 but am willing to take my chances there.

Tbh if it was me I would go for the x10..it really does look like the best option in that price range and I love the look of it as well.:cool:
 
There are many options. I went with the V1 because, of all the things I value the DSLR for, speed of operation was number one. The V1 chugs through menus, shoots, focuses and behaves as fast as your D5000 does; It also enabled me to keep the little things I value, like my Nikkor primes, RAW shooting and the NEF format.
 
The X10 would be the best if you want a viewfinder. I missed one more than I realised when not using a DSLR. Looking through the viewfinder makes me look at the potential photo differently for some reason.
 
..of course, the V1 is over budget, but the J1 might be OK. The other advantage is that the sensor is omuch larger than the S100 or the X10, which shows in dynamic range and depth of field, not that you can't get great depth of field with any compact.
 
It really does look like the best option in that price range and I love the look of it as well.

not sure if you're refering to the J1 or the others. Personally, I subscribe to the the view that 'I'd rather have a decent camera with me than an excellent camera at home' but if I were looking at high end compacts, I'd look hard at the smaller CSC stuff aswell.

Compacts... S100, X10
CSC's... J1, GF3, Pen

The V1 makes little compromises, and I too couldn't do without a decent viewfinder. Of all the CSC's, I like the bauhaus looks of the V1 best, but again, get your hands dirty with the competition before committing.
 
I'm in the market for something like this as well, that X10 looks nice :)
 
Thanks everyone for your advice...I am now the proud owner of a Nikon J1 and a twin lens kit. Very, very pleased with the results so far. I shall report back after further usage!
