Alan, 3 options listed when using the view mode button on the rear, you can turn it off.

- back LCD + VF on with eye sensor
- back LCD + VF off

I've kept my D700 because its that damn good I can't imagine being without it. Its no longer my day to day camera though, the nikon V1's my choice a lot of the time now! In fact its off to Vietnam with a collection of lenses in March and for once the big gears staying at home. My mate thought i was mad until he saw my recent images from Thailand, I'm sure the fuji and sony offerings are just as good, being able to used my nikkor lenses with the ft1 adaptor is what swung it for me over other systems.

I'm hoping that a later firmware update might bring a fourth option:

- back LCD off & VF on with eye sensor

It seems like a strange omission that it's not been included already. It should be a useful one for conserving battery power by switching off the OVF HUD or EVF when it's not needed.

My comments earlier in the thread are related to XE-1 (EVF only). I'm not sure if OVF would make a difference for me, never having tried the XPro or X100 families which have those.

This has really thrown a spanner in the works! I can get a used X-E1 for half the price of a new X-E2, saves me nearly A$700.
So my next question is how much better is the X-E2 over the X-E1?

I dont think any of the fuji bodies are good enough yet. They feel like a big drop in performance compared to dslrs, i am a fuji owner as well as nikon. The fuji glass is amazingly good. by performance i mean the cameras are slow to respond and focus, even the new x-e2 isnt much faster. They will feel like a big, big drop in responsive compared to d700. However, id buy an x-e1 with lots of lenses in anticipation of a better camera. i could live with the x-e1 knowing it was only while i got used to the fuji system and was to be replaced. the files from the fuji are excellent. dynamic range and tone is excellent. iso is worse than d700. not by much though. the images to me from fuji compete with full frame.

Hmm I've been debating something smaller to carry around as well recently. My camera for a while now has been my phone - the best camera is the one you have with you as they say.

Decided to take the 5D and 85mm 1.8 out today with my little boy and have gone back to thinking that combo is not too bad to carry around and I love the combo. I'll change my mind again next week when I don't have it with me - but would I have an X-Pro1 with me - I think I really want something pocketable, so may end up with an LX7 or something smaller. Or more likely I will go round in a never ending circle and do nothing - at least by the time I make a decision I should be able to buy everything cheaply second hand! ;)
