downside with 0ptical stabilisation

hi just wondered what the downside is with o/s on the sigma 150-500mm or similar lens is,thanks,if there wasnt any i dont think there would be an off switch:)

yes but what about iq does the o/s make the pic softer or anything else
 
I believe it can degrade the quality in some cases when you don't require it like when mounted on a tripod but also I believe it uses more power so the battery drains quicker.
 
Not a particularly good move to use it when panning a moving subject.
In body stabilisation scores there, as you can select it to only operate in one plane.
i.e. it helps stabilise up and down shakes when panning horizontally.


Correction to the above; I'm obviously wrong on that for this particular lens, though the comment certainly holds true for some other manufacturers.
I'm curious now, does anyone offer a lens based solution for panning in portrait mode with OIS on, which might be applicable to athletic track events etc. ?

And you're certain that can't be done with lens based stabilisation?:nuts:
 
You are of course quite correct Phil, I'm obviously behind the times on the latest Sigma OS, as the only Os lenses I have are Panasonic ones.

Do you know if you can use the Sigma OS for panning horizontally whilst in portrait mode, or just in Landscape?
