Downloading RAW in CS4 problem??

I cannot currently download RAW images to Photoshop CS4. It comes up with the dialogue box stating that it "can not be opened as it is not the right kind of document".

I have read in a magazine that Adobe release upgrades on their website that overcomes this problem, which I have tried to access but have failed to date.

I have a Cannon 550D (not sure if this makes any difference?).

Can someone please point me in the right direction?
 
Your camera came out after photoshop CS4 updates stopped so it's not directly compatable, the only fix is to use the free DNG converter from adobes website, this converts your raw to DNG (another sort of raw) that CS4 will open properly.

I've been in there and downloaded something but it doesn't seem to be working. Can you give me more specific details? Sorry to be a pain. Also is it possible that this will blend into cs4 so that I can just open the raw file through that programme without having to convert in another before opening in cs4?

No CS4 isn't compatable with the raw files from the 550d, Adobe stop support for a version once a newer version comes out, the only way to open your raw directly is to upgrade to CS5, (or buy Elements 9) or get Lightroom or something like Paint shop pro etc.
The conversion is quick and easy, although not ideal as it adds an extra step to your workflow.
Check to see you have the latest DNG converter but make sure that your camera raw 8BI file is not the latest one 6.3 but the latest one for CS4 which is 5.7, the 6.3 one will only work in CS5.
