I am trying to download from the camera using the Canon software, but it keeps saving the pictures in .jpg format even though I have the camera set up to take raw + .jpg so logically to me it should have raw files

Any ideas please as this is driving me nuts and I want to try and play with some processing.

Haven't used DPP for a long time, but try simply saving some images as RAW and see what it makes of them.

Sorry, this reply isn't helpful, but I had the same problem. It drove me nuts too, so I switched to just shooting in Raw. sorry I can't help :(

I would copy those RAW files to my PC, then open them in another RAW editor.

The problem is I cannot copy them as raw files, as every time I bring them across fron the camera they are .jpg

I will try again tomorrow - another day and perhaps something might work.

Macmike, that was quite helpful - at least its not just me

Yes, that's probably because you use Canon's software to copy them from the card to the PC's HD.
So don't use Canon's software to do the copying/downloading! Open the card on your PC's desktop, find the RAW photos/files, select them, and copy them to the PC's HD with Windows like you copy/duplicate any old other file.
When those RAW files are on your PC you can open them in another RAW editor.

If I right click and go to explore, then to canon/DCIM through to the picture files and hover over a file, the properties show as jpeg, there are no raw ones showing - I think the easy way will be to start shooting in raw only!!

How about first opening another RAW editor, like PS10/CS3, and then importing those RAW files within that RAW editor from the card by selecting 'Open...' and navigating to the RAW files on the card?

Thanks, I will try downloading with another editor, need to get at the discs though, and they are all covered up as I'm decorating!!

Something for next week!!

Are you copying the files directly from the camera? This problem has been reported before and using a card reader seemed to solve it.

Thanks, yes its direct from the camera, I did not realise it was a known problem, but at least its easily solved, I can order a card reader tomorrow :)

Procesing here I come!!!

Yeah, what W.Smith said. I`d never use bundled software, just connect your camera and copy the files into a folder then process them.

Me too, BUT...

I shoot only in RAW, but I regularly get jpg's off the camera instead. I may shoot 200 pictures and the first 50 will be in RAW witht he rest solely as jpg. Whn I check the camera settings it's set to RAW.

Very frustrating.

Might be a simple answer:-

Dont forget that the camera will only shoot in RAW in the:
A-Dep, M, AV, TV and P modes.
In the other modes it will shoot in jpeg.

You mean the portrait mode, landscape mode, sports mode, and so on?

Yep.

It could be the OP has it set to shoot RAW+Jpeg in the M, AV modes etc but is shooting in the Landscape etc modes.

For some reason, with Canon even if you have opted for RAW, if you select one of the picture styles, i.e Landscape, portrait, sport etc, if defaults to jpeg.

dont use the canon software, just open up your card in a normal folder and copy all the files and paste them into watever new folder you want them in.

if its something to do with the conon software this will bypass it nicely.

I was shooting in tv mode (I rarely use the set modes) but I have set it for raw only now so I will see what happens next time I take it out. There is a card reader on order just in case though!

Charlie C, I did try that but the same thing happened

I always shoot on manual and very often there'll be jpgs dotted around in the middle of the RAW files - very frustrating.
