For no particular reason I have put off downloading El Capitan, but feel now I should. Has anyone downloaded recently, if so, roughly how long does it take and is there a best time of day to do it?

I have just checked my download speed, which is 18.46 Mb/s.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. :)

I did it about a month ago no problems. But watch for the reboot after you log in it takes some time to come ready. Well mine did but other than that no problems

Thanks guys for your prompt replies. 2 hours for total download and installation sounds good to me. I was thinking I might have to leave the whole thing on overnight.

I installed it on my macbook last week... I always update my macbook before my iMac just to test all the plugins etc. work first. There were some reports of Nik not working properly and there hasn't been an El Cap compatibility update so I was a bit wary of that one... seems to be working fine on the Macbook though so I guess I'll risk the iMac soon.

If I remember correctly, the download was around 6Gb... so you can do the maths to see how long it will take...

Funnily enough i did exactly the same thing this week on my iMac and so far no problems, took about an hour or so in total from start to finish. I have Nik as a plugin and no problems, not sure about the standalone tho as i don't use it that way...
Good luck!

I'm still on Yosemite!

The simple reason is all my workflow applications
are not compatible (two are not) and, since at this
point it is all working fine, I'm in no rush to go for it!

I did it a month ago on both my macbook and IMac and it pretty much took an hour or so from start to finish.

Did my daughters air when she was home from Uni over Christmas - can't remember how long, but wasn't a long time 30 - 45 mins ?

No issues at all...

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have just downloaded and installed El Capitan and it appears to be working fine. It took 40 minutes to download @ 22.9mbs and 25 minutes to install, so not too bad.:)

I installed it soon after it came out and to be honest no problems or incompatibility issues - if anything didn't really notice any difference. More than I can say for the Windows 10 update on my MS laptop.

Nik works fine on my MBP with El C.

The only thing I shall miss is the Google toolbar, which I believe is no longer available. What do you guys use to search?

Safari / Preferences / Search /
just use google as the search engine, type what you are looking for in the address bar.

Thanks, Paul. That is perfect and takes up less room on the screen than having an extra toolbar.

Must have a look at a few of the tutorials, but so far, I'm liking the upgrade.

No problem Alan, thats what the forum is all about

I think that ElCapitan is probably the best version of OS X that I have ever used and I have used everyone of them.

If I go back to my original Mac days with System 6 and look at what has been achieved its bloody amazing, wonder what the future holds in 20 years time, will there be such things as Macbooks???? I think not.

I agree. The upgrader should research software and hardware compatibility, more so if they are upgrading from a much older OS such as Snow Leopard. Also, upgrading to fix a problem such as beach balling or freezing will just make the problem worse. Get your OS into good condition before upgrading, and as insurance backup before upgrading.

I would advise once El Capitan is downloaded to the applications folder, halting the installation and duplicating the installer elsewhere on your Mac to save the effort incase you ever need to download it again, as after installation the installer is deleted. It's also useful downloading the free Diskmaker X 5 and with an 8GB USB stick creating a bootable installer. Slimmer USB memory sticks are better for use with MacBook Pro's, as chunky ones will stop you plugging in an external USB hard drive at the same time. Not a problem on iMac's and MacBook Air's.

El Capitan has already solved a problem for me. I use Affinity Photo for processing my images and was having problems using the "Share" Facility to upload to Flickr, it just wouldn't work with any of my images. I did post on the Affinity forum, but no one could offer an explanation, until one member did say that there had been issues, but with much earlier versions of Mac software. So, I thought now is the time to upgrade and voila no more problems uploading via the "Share" button...:)

I love the new cursor reveal when you shake the mouse... sounds daft but I was always losing the cursor before ElCap!

Me too ;) In fact I'm only just on Yosemite.

Top tip: d/l El Cap when you have some time. You don't need to install it (in fact you may not need to complete the d/l). That way, it will always be available to you in the App store. I had a tricky time getting Yosemite because they had released El Cap before I got round to installing Yosemite. That means my Apple account can never access it.

Chris.

I use Affinity for all of my processing now and find it excellent, but never having used any of the Adobe products, I am unable to make a comparison. At the moment Affinity doesn't have DAM, (see link below) so you will need to use an alternative, I use Canon DPP, which works fine. The Affinity tutorials are vey good when learning, but you do need to pay attention as the are very fast.:) I have posted on the forum and asked them to slow down a bit, so will wait and see what happens.

One other thing I have noticed since the download is, my computers available memory is higher. I have 8gb of memory on my machine and before when using just Safari the usage in the top bar was showing about 3.90gb available, but at the moment whilst typing this post, with the same apps open, it's showing 5.19gb.

I have just purchased LR6 and use it to import and the majority of my processing there. Affinity can be added as an 'edit in' for more in depth processing and I use that when needed. Works well for me and cheaper than buying the monthly Adobe package.

Have to say.... Safari has been horribly unresponsive ever since the El Cap installation... Can't positively confirm it's El Cap to blame but I've done nothing else major to my system...

I'm using PS CS4 which didn't play nicely with older OS. El Capitan also solved those problems and all works perfectly now. A couple of plugins work now, too, which didn't before.

I'm using it all the time. In fact I've been using it as part of accessibility and performance testing today...I doubt it is an inherent problem or perhaps I'm just lucky...

Love El Captain! The best one yet. Fast and reliable, and boots up fast for me with an SSD but have noticed at work with a HDD it does take that little bit longer, however, once booted it is very quick to use.
