Hi,
I'm looking for some help with a problem I'm having with download speeds.
I'm trying to download windows office 2010 on a brand new laptop. Now, I'm with BT for my Internet and doing a download test via speedtest.net I get a download speed of approx 3mb. Now, when I view the status of the download I get a speed showing of 20.6kb! This started at about 40-50kb but it just goes down. States the download will take approx 11 hours!!!
Why so slow????
It's this speed via wireless and direct wired.

I'm totally at a loss, please help.
 
It could just be the speed the site is allowing.

I find they limit the speed to allow thousands of downloads.

Try another site or something else to be sure.
 
Microsoft's download servers aren't that slow. The DVDs shipped with an MSDN subscriptions are far from comprehensive (e.g. no W7 Pro - you get ultimate and home premium but professional is download only) so I have to download DVD images from time to time. It saturates the office ADSL connection, albeit at a not exactly stellar 2Mbps.
 
Are you sure it was using the wired connection when you tested the speed? just plugging a cable in will often not stop the laptop choosing to use wireless. I have to disable wireless to get mine to use the wired connection.

If it is the server causing the slow speed it may speed up if left overnight to get on with it.
 
After 4 hours I gave up. Before I did though I went onto youtube and watched a video no bother without issue. So it would then seem that the issue is at Microsofts end.

Fair point, didn't change anything though.

The download speed just gets slower and slower as the download goes on.
 
The actual download speed will never even approach 3mb when downloading a file.
You might sometimes see it get above 500kb.
Try again at a quieter time maybe first thing in the morning.
It's all about traffic and not only to that particular site.
 
Don't forget the difference between MB and Mbit :)

3Mbit internet connection is not the same as downloading 3.0 MB/sec.

3Mbit will support a max of 375KB/sec (8 bits in a byte)
