A mate from work has asked if I would try get a few decent shots of him racing. I was already thinking of getting a new lens to replace my kit lens and was considering either the Sigma 17-70 or the Sigma 18-50. Then thought a nifty fifty might do a decent job looking at some of the fantastic photos here.

Does anyone here have any experience photographing mountain bike racing? what lens do you use? Any tips for a newbie :)

i used to go downhill mountain biking, and from my experiance i would use a flash head on second curtain.

dont know about lens, i used to use the kit lens.

also, i found that if you got low on taking the pictures just added a different angle.

but im no pro........

I use a 70-200mm F4 L, but, it's not a common lens to have although it's very good. Used my 50mm prime a few times, get the hang of focusing and you'll get some good keepers.

I'd agree with the flash comment, preferably a decent flash off the camera. However, you might be best ensuring anyone you photograph in this way is aware/ok with it.

Cheers for the tips. Mates going for a practice tommorow so I'm going to pop along with the kit lens and have a go :)

I only have the internal flash at the moment but will try with it set on the second curtain.
