Ive currently got a DSLR but I honestly find it too impractical to use, its just too big. When I bought it I didnt think the size would bother me at all but it really does. I travel alot on budget airlines and with it in my bag, my luggage is almost gone! So im thinking about selling it for bridge or just a good compact. But at the same time I dont wanna loose its potential. If im really honest im not getting the most out of it with the settings and mostly just leave it be. What im really after is the ability to always be carrying it just on the off chance etc.
Id probably get £150ish for my camera if I sold it.
so at the moment im torn between the sony http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/80293/show.html or another canon http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/77155/show.html
any ideas or advice?
cheers

How about a M4/3 camera like a Panasonic G2 or a 2ndhand G1? You get all the advantages of a DLSR in the size of a bridge camera,

Have you though to bridge camera?

I had a lumix FZ8 a few years ago. And bridge are good compromise, not has big as a SLR, lighter and you have a lens which go from quiet wide to extrazoom. I still miss the versatility of the lens. And usefull preset mode.

I know that today different brand are in this market and the result are really good.

from what ive seen bridge cameras are out of my league price wise but id love one, they'd be perfect for me. Ive only got a 350d so i could only really afford what id get for that, so £150ish. I have no qualms with 2nd hand/refurbished though.

My mother in law has got a Nikon compact, I forget which one now, but it delivers the most amazing quality pictures. I think it was about £150.

The point is you don't need an SLR to get some high quality pictures - an SLR just gives you the creative control.

Nothing wrong with downgrading if an SLR doesn't suit your needs.

I'll find out which one she went for and let you know.

I've been thinking the same thing recently. I go on a lot of long walks and like to carry as little as possible. I'd never sell my dslr, but if you find a cheap, good quality compact let us know, most of the ones I tried out suffer from horrific shutter lag with terrible screens.

Have you thought about something like a Canon G10/11/12?
Nice compromise on size, still shoots RAW, has a hotshoe for creative lighting if you choose to use it and can be used manually.
From the sounds of things it ticks all the boxes.

I have a g9 and would definitely recommend one. Just bought a 40d though as the main area where the canon g series cameras let you down is in low light. The noise coming from a tiny sensor crammed with pixels can be quite bad. High iso performance is not their strong point.
However on a nice sunny day or if you are happy using flash they are fantastic.

Yeah, I'd recommend the G9. Great camera and suits me well for casual family shots when i don't want to lug around the Dslr.
