Down loading images from camera to PC

Now I 've started playing with RAW images, I've noticed that they can take quite a while to download from the camera to the PC...

I have the following opitions...

1) The CF card can be plugged direct into a built-in card reader on the front of the PC.

2) I can plug a card reader into the USB 2.0 port and down load that way.

Or

3) Connect the camera directly to the USB 2.0 port...

Which likely to be the fasted way to download the images? Any other issues surrounding the process i need to be aware of?

I would personally plug the card into a card reader, which is either permanently plugged in, or nearby.

I personally have never plugged the camera in, or downloaded images that way. Not for years now.

The main reason, is not only due to ease, but wear and tear on the camera ports.
 
Card reader all the way... the faster the better. The problem with attaching the camera is there's a very real danger of dragging the camera off the desk with that cable.

Also I've heard from 2 separate repair guys in the trade that constantly plugging and unplugging the cable into the camera causes damage to the socket and even cracking to the internal circuit board. It seems it's true regardless of the cost of the camera too.
 
Thanks guys; I suspected that repeatedly hooking up the camera to the PC might not be a good idea...

So is there any diffeence between using the built-in card reader on the PC or a stand alone card reader with regards download speed?

I've been trying to find out if the built in card reader uses USB 2.0 or the older, slower version, but so far, no luck...

USB 2 is what you want Pete it's markedly faster.
