Yes
Carswell has announced his resignation from Parliament and that he will then stand in the immediate by-election as a candidate for UKIP.

Whatever your political persuasion that is infinitely more honourable than retaining the seat until next year's General Election and infinitely more honourable than we are seeing from councillers and public servants this week in South Yorkshire.

The more the merrier.

Am I being cynical in suggesting that he has calculated that smaller parties do better in by-elections than in General Elections?

On the South Yorkshire point I agree 100% - truly shocking behaviour.

Agreed - and on the subject of South Yorkshire, how can this happen even once, let alone in various different places?

There will always be crime and criminals and it is only the criminals who are responsible for their actions, but, repeatedly, the agencies (police, child protection agencies, local authorities) let these children down, and let the public down too. They always end up apologising and always end up claiming that lessons have been learned, but this, even if true, doesn't put wrongs right.

The problem always seems to be 'political correctness' and fear of being suspected of being racist.
My understanding of it is that the only reason that a small number of these vile people were even prosecuted is that the head of the CPS, who is himself of Pakistani origin, had the guts to actually push ahead despite opposition from the police and other agencies.

It suits him and UKIP to have by election soon.

Who is head of the CPS in South Yorkshire?

No. He's the guy in charge of the CPS in the North West. The one who goes after TV personalities. I assume he was in involved in the Rochdale prosecutions though.

As for Carswell, whatever you may think of his politics, He's definitely done the honourable thing in resigning and putting himself up for immediate re-electionn under his new colours. Unlike previous MPs who have chosen to swap parties in recent years, but carried on in the HoC, regardless of the fact that they had effectively disenfranchised the people who voted them in.

.
It seems, if the guardian is to be believed he was instrumental in getting the whole thing up and running.

Nazir Afzal readily acknowledges that his cultural heritage played a part in getting nine men convicted of running a child exploitation ring in Rochdale earlier this year. He famously reopened the case against the gang of Asian men that groomed young girls for sex, shortly after his appointment as head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the north-west of England. And he suggests that being an Asian himself made it easier to take that step.

On Radio 4 Today programme this morning, Roger Lord, who was due to stand in Clacton as a UKIP candidate, is not prepared to just stand aside and let the "new boy" step in.

Douglas Carswell looks like Popeye.

There ends my interest in his position on stuff. :)

Another cynic here, I'm afraid. Smacks of self serving opportunism to me.

To be the first Ukip M.P. would be quite the history footnote.

Historic yes.
But useless , toothless and lacking in every conceivable way? Err...yes.

Indeed. That's why it would only be a footnote.

It gets more free lunches than Tory backbench anonymity.
