I have just depressed myself looking for a dslr, I found what I think is a really good deal a pentax-k-x-18-55mm+55-300mm-black for £429 trouble is thats way out of my league and not only that, then come the filters,memory and eventually a decent flash gun.

You lot must have understanding partners!! if I told mine I was going to spend the best part of £800 on a bottom of the range dslr camera I would come home and find my clothes on the lawn and new locks fitted :lol:

So I guess I`ll have to carry on with my Fuji s5700 until dslr`s come down a bit on ebay.

Whilst on the subject of ebay I`m amazed at the amount of muppets who haven`t researched what they are bidding for, they aren`t that far off the new prices for some cameras.
 
buy a second hand one to get you started - thats what I have just done from the classifieds on here. Unfortunately for you the access criteria for the classified boards has been changed so you need 100 posts and 30 days membership to see them.

seriously though... you don't need to drop £800 on camera gear in one hit. also, play it like the girls do.... i bought all this for £600 and it should have been well over £900 new... what a bargain!

you can get an old nikon d40 and a kit lens for about £200-250 on ebay easily, then just get a small shoulder bag and youre set to start off with.

definitely no need to spend £800 in one go...
 
D70, buy a D70.

I spent £700 on one once and if I wanted a starter camera now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy that camera again at the £150 it is now.
In fact, I might buy one and chuck my other crap out..:)

I know when I had my pentax me super it was quite limited with just the 50mm lens so a decent zoom would be quite an urgent need then there`s filters, I have always used a uv on my lenses for protection, a 28mm wide angle would also be on my wish list and a decent flash,it soon mounts up.


I have only just bought the fuji s5700 for £55 inc p+p and am enjoying taking photographs again instead of snapshots with my fuji A330, it is nice to be able to adjust everything again, like I could with the pentax but I will always be a hobbyist rather than an enthusiast.
I just want to take good photos as a diary of my families lives and experiences rather than going out on photoshoots.

I will one day get a dslr and it will be a used one, as I am my disabled wifes carer so money is tight.

My goal is to learn to take much better photos and this forum is full of very helpful people who are willing to give good advice.:thumbs:

I would probably go for a Canon as I have read that lenses are far more obtainable than other makes but I do have a certain loyalty to pentax, I loved the me super but film is too expensive to shoot off willy nilly thats why I got rid of it.
 
A Canon 20D with 18-55 IS kit lens will set you back about £250ish on ebay.
 
Keep looking, I managed to grab a D80 the other day for £200! and it only had 7000 actuations on it, and a lovely Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens on here for £170 (but you can pick up a 50mm 1.8 for £60ish). You can get half decent flash guns for off camera use for £20-30 if you don't mind stepping away from the big names.
 
You don't have to spend anything like £800 to get started. Look for a second hand body and kit lens, memory cards are cheap, and that's all you need for now.
 
if you don't have the cash you can't buy simples - save up and then purchase.

The D40 idea is a good one, tho I'd find it hard to swallow to pay £200 for a used one when mine cost £215 brand new! My D40 and kit lens done me for a year of learning before I started upgrading, and even then it's only because I had some money to spend at the time. Don't ask what my total spend is now, three years later tho :shake: :eek:

I posted a thread here a wee while ago asking how people afford their gear, as I consider myself on the low-middle end of gear ownership, and there were some really interesting answers, from credit-card abuse to buying/selling/upgrading wisely to don't ask such a silly question :bonk: What I did learn is that everyone has to start somewhere, and the initial outlay will usually sting a bit.

Can I ask why you want to upgrade so soon from the S5700? I had an S5500, the predecessor of your camera, and it taught me a lot about using the shutter and aperture modes creatively. I had my S5500 for 5 years before I decided to upgrade, and I think it was the best money I've ever spent on photography - I paid £130 for my S5500 :thumbs:

Oh, and you're right about ebay muppets, it's well known that a lot of buyers on ebay have more money than sense :thinking:
 
You can get some fantastic bargains at the mo Nikon D5000 with 2 lens under £500 at JESSOPS! Gutted.

I gave up the fags to pay for mine and got everyone to give me a tenner as a Xmas present...Get grief of the old man but only because he doesn't know how to use it.
 
I wouldn't hesitiate to buy second hand if it gets you what you want.
People buying high-end gear will normally look after it very well.. meaning it's in good nick 2 years later when they flog it to upgrade.

I'm hoping that the D4 will launch next month sending the D3s price plummetting! ;)
 
Don't forget that you don't need to buy the whole system in one hit - a body and a lens or two will get you going, then you can add more lenses and other accessories as and when you can afford them.

I am very happy with my s5700 it was just curiosity regarding the Pentax KX as my nephew has just bought one,He has more money than sense so I hope he`ll upgrade soonish and flog me the pentax:naughty:

You could try buying her some chocolates or flowers and see what happens:lol:

Be prepared, the digital world of photgraphy can be addictive and very expensive, but as others have stated you could start at a much lower price level.

When I bought my Pentax K-5 (A Xmas present for myself) I made sure I got the wifes something at the same time just to show I hadn't forgotten her.

Not sure if she liked the ironing board though as I'm still not allowed back in the house. :shrug:
 
Message 23, blimey that's a cracking bag of kit for the money, I reckon someone could pick that up at the asking price and probably sell the peripheral dross back on eBay for £100+ probably more and end up with a great starter set up at a steal

Not worth more than £350 tops.

GX10 £200, 18-55mm £30, 55-200mm £50, Chinon 50mm £30.
Rest of the bits have very little value.

I do get a little muddled with the canon model numbers, I have been looking at 300/350D the D40 is a much newer camera (just looked it up) I understand the cmos thingy is more desirable than ccd and both those models have it, I think I`ll just enjoy the fuji for a while though and have a really good look when I have the wedge circa 2020AD lol
