I wonder if a don't like a post as well as a like the post option might be enough for some folks rather than go off on one ?

There are posts that i don't agree with but refuse to get embroiled in the discussion putting it politely :)

Oh dear the children of the forum could really expand their petty behaviour then   some people are bitter and twisted enough without extra toys to play with I think ;)

NikonKev, I don't like your proposal.
Hey! Wait a minute.....

They've just introduced this on another forum I go on and it just seems to me to be a licence for certain people to vilify someone and their views without actually taking trouble ... Or having the decency or even courage ... to actually put forward some form of contrary argument. If you don't like something then either don't get involved, or get involved and say something constructive. I wouldn't support the idea of a "don't like" button.

I asked about a 'don't like' option a while back although it was in jest.

Best way not to get embroiled in something is to not get embroiled in it.

I use another forum that shows a total of likes minus dislikes. Yet has no reference to who clicked. It's nice to see complete jerks getting a big minus. But on the whole it is of no real value.

Speaking as a Member rather than with my Mod's hat on, I'd rather the "like" option was removed personally... Never was fond of the idea from the outset, and it does seem to be used by certain cliques to stir things up in contentious threads... I'd actually donate my Jaffa Cake Ration for the next 6 months if the Like option was removed instantly a thread is locked for further replies, as really, there's no positive reason whatsoever to employ it after the thread is locked

ETA: why did I know i'd end up with this post getting "likes"

The only use I can see for the 'like' button, is to save loads of people posting "me too" or "I agree" or similar clutter.

Yep my answer to the replys was going to be in light of a recent now closed post Racism, intolerance, trolling and the fine art of conversation the Like button gets abused far to frequently so away with it seems like a good balance !

How many of these :jaffa: are required ?

Personally I'd loose it completely not just from locked threads...as to be honest as good as it is, I don't think the positive use of a like button out weighs the negatives that have come with it, I've certainly seen examples of people liking post that go against someone they don't get a long with...it's pathetic really but hey...if people could behave like the grown ups they are meant to me it would be a good feature

I've boycotted the Like button so i will have to contribute to the thread by stating that i like that image ;)

It was an opportunity too good to miss

How about a Mob button? Where people can get together and mob someone until they cry. Or a "Stupid Git" button.
Oh! the fun we could have.

That's brilliant!

And I agree that it would be good somehow to disarm the tiny minority of "mobbers" and generally rude people on here and other forums. How though I have no idea :)

I say we take off and nuke them from orbit, it's the only way to be sure...

Cheers, and as with pretty much all things in life it's the tiny minority who spoil all the fun for everyone :(

I'm ambivalent about the Like button. Main may issue, if you like, is I feel it makes members lazy and some use the Like button rather than actually comment.

Cheers and, yes, I do use the Like button :)

Yes I've noticed that a lot with un answered photo threads where often you'll open the thread to find its been liked multiple times but not recieved any comments :(

And also yes I do use the like button too

That is the whole point of the like button.
If it wasn't there you would have lots of, or lots more 1 or 2 word replies. "Great", "Nice shot".
I guess the admins want people to use it.

Maybe it is time to remove the "like" feature, especially given this reply by Marcel in a recent thread

I have used the like feature myself in the past when I don't want to get embroiled in a heated conversation but agree on the whole with what a poster has said.

However having been on a few fora that utilize a like, rep or kudos system they always seem to be more abused than used for there intended purpose

I use the Like button as a quick reply. I don't think I would use a don't like button, if someone is disagreeable I just use the Ignore facility.

I thought that there would be more replies to this thread???

I agree Kev, the 'Like' button is a useful quick reply, especially if someone has already posted a comment that you agree with.
A 'Don't like' button would just be rude IMO, and serve no positive purpose for the forum ... there are enough disagreeable comments posted without adding an anonymous negative.

Who said that :P

Too many toys too much time on their hands, itwas never going to end well :D

"Like" :D
Although I can see both sides of the "argument"
I do agree it tends to make people lazy,
its far easier to hit the button than type "I agree",
But while you are typing I agree, it only takes a couple of seconds to say why you agree,
or disagree for that matter.

Nothing wrong with having lots of toys as long as you mummy and daddy raised you well enough to know how to share :p and be nice

And certainly does lead to laziness when posting which is very bad IMO

I always found the "like" button useful to show I agreed with a particular post rather than clutter up the thread, also it let me leave a "nice shot" reply when I didn't have anything extra to add to the critique

(Speaking from a personal point of view, I'd much rather have a "like" on a shot that 30 views with silence :( )

Sometimes someone asks a question and I think of the answer then read on and find someone has posted the exact answer I was about to post. So I've clicked the like on that answer. However I don't know if it helps or even why I did it.

I find the like button handy when you want to approve something but either don't have the time to write a full comment or don't want to clutter a thread with +1 etc.

As with everything, what man can invent man can adapt to sod things up, but it doesn't mean the original purpose isn't still good.

Well I liked this post because I liked the content and agree with the OP!
I also like the like button.
