Don't know how to stop upgrade to windows 10

I have kept putting off the upgrade to windows 10. I have kept clicking the update for a couple of days to avoid it installing. But it has installed and was going to run when I turned off the computer, I know it's not the right thing to do, but I just unplugged the computer to get rid of it. So what can I do to stop the installation of it, I am not techy minded either, so any help I will be very grateful for
 
If it is in progress I would let it continue and run. Then if you really don't like it roll it back. Switching it off mid upgrade is likely to be one of the worst things to do. But it should recover and continue.
 
I'd suggest just trying it. I've now installed on 4 PCs and all are working ok
 
Ok thanks, so the best thing I can do is back it all up, if I don't like it roll it back to 7
 
I've installed this on 4 newer home laptops without issue so far. Typically OS upgrades in the past were horrible (I've worked in the financial tech industry the last decade) but I was very surprised with this most recent windows iteration

Saying that, if it's your only computer and your production environment then i'd recommend holding off for a while unless you don't mind rolling up the sleeves if something goes awry. If you've already upgraded and it doesn't work out, then you have 30 days to roll back seamlessly.

That's a big if, as folk on the other thread discovered.

Also there are bound to lots of bugs in a new OS so, it makes sense to me, to let it get sorted out for half a year or so.
 
And in the mean time millions are very happily using it :) as always there is more than one side to a story.

Ok thank you everyone for your replies, i will be upgrading from 7, I guess I will have to try it then, now the thing has installed, I must admit I dread it, there are always problems, I just hope it all works.
 
Just switch off auto updates.

Apparently you can't, or rather you can only switch them off for so long - 10 days I believe.

Part of the EULA is that you agree to take all updates.

Also since Microsoft had to patch Win 10 with a huge patch (almost 1GB), within a few days of launching it it sounds like it's going to need patching a lot.

Also Microsoft has stopped "Patch Tuesday" for Win 10 and will simply download patches as needed.

BTW apparently Win 7 will be supported until 2020 so no need to rush to upgrade although it may be a good idea in a few months to download the ISO and keep it handy just in case Microsoft does start to charge eventually.

Yes I did this it uninstalls patch KB3035583. however it installed it again when I turned my PC off, I have uninstalled it again and turned off automatic updates, so hopefully that should do it, I don't understand how Microsoft can just install 10 on your PC with out you wanting it, seems odd or am I missing something ? anyway I have no interest in 10 for at least another 6 months, so will leave it until then.

I understood it to be that you actually had to order it. That is what I did and got it confirmed and was ready and waiting for me. Are you sure you never ordered it from the icon in your system tray?

No never ordered it, I just got the icon permanently in the right hand corner of the task bar, which appeared a while back, when you click on it, it asks if you want to upgrade, I was under the impression that Jango's just started to upgrade without him prompting, unless I read it wrong, maybe he can clarify

Just make sure you hide that patch and you will be fine.

As for turning off the updates, most folk on here will have kittens, although I ran like that for years on most Win OS and the world ever ended:p

you have to accept/approve the 10 update.

Nope... I'm on Windows 8 and have auto update off. I manually select what I want to update, and when I want to update it. I've had Windows 10 in my updates ready to go for weeks now... I've just not been installing it.
 
Win 10 upgrade has been flawless, so far! All working 100%. Give it a go as you can always roll back as it gives you the option to do that

I meant that once Win 10 is installed you can only turn off updates for a limited period - about 10 days or so - then you have to accept them.

I know.... but that wasn't what you asked about in your OP.
 
I did order it, but I wanted to install it when I was ready, so I kept delaying it with the dates, but in the end it just downloaded and was ready to install, I have now done it last night but not had a play yet.
I'm a lady TJ

Don't forget to manually run them though. Some updates are essential. Just make sure the Win 10 upgrade is un-ticked before you hit install.

I manually run Windows update every week.
 
Just a note for those on Windows 10 already and who don't want updates (for whatever reason), you can enable a Group policy on the machine and uncheck the auto-update options - this will stop all updates until the 'administrator' allows them.
Obviously it's not ideal, but for someone who has an issue with the computer doing it's own thing a-la skynet, then this will help. (y)
